Just bought a 426 and want to keep it safe and legal in the woods. Is there a relatively inexpensive and easy spark arrestor available that will fit on the stock pipe? Can I make one from a semi-fine wire mesh and attach it to the inside of the pipe exit?
Hey, congratulations on the bike. The 426 is awesome fun to ride! As far as the spark arrestor goes you might be able to do the homemade screen thing but only if the forest officers where you ride don't look for the official stamp that comes on forest approoved spark arrestors. There is a company out there that makes a set of elliptical discs that can be adapted to the rear of your stock muffler (can't think of their name right now) leaving you with a set up very similar to a White Brothers E series. This is also a little queiter than the E series because the stock muffler is a few inches longer. FMF makes a special spark/arrestor muffler they claim meets the federal sound requirements but it is a little expensive. I bought a E series for racing and swapped out the end caps. I like the shorter muffler for the track where it seems to enhance the mid range punch and I was able to adapt the disc pack to the stock muffler for the woods for a reasonably quiet spark legal set up with no loss of power. In fact I think my hybrid stocker/E series disc set up actually gives me more top for those fast fire road sections.
I ran my YZ250F for a couple rides with just some aluminum screen hose clamped over the exhaust outlet. It works as good as any spark arrestor but good luck explaining it to a forest service weenie or a DNR officer.:silly:
I then purchased a disk style end cap from BMP ($129.95). It fits real well and has no adverse effects on power with all eight of the supplied disks installed. With eight disks in place, it is just a touch quieter than the stock end cap.
