I'm a pretty big (ok, very big) guy...weigh about 270...anyhow, after an incredibly long hiatus (years! - lets just say the last bike I rode was an xr 80!) I am looking into getting a bike and starting up again...(my brother has infected me with the 'fever, thanks to vids like WrathChild and the "Crusty" series)...anyhow, he has recommended that I look into getting a 93-94 cr 500...(I'm hoping to do this with about 1600 bucks or so)...and I'm trying to weigh the differences between it and a cr 250 in regards to my size...(the latter being far more accessible)...any thoughts about it? I'm lookin into doin some moto-crossy stuff...but I'm just too ignorant...

thanks!

The 500 will work. I had one, lots and lots of power. The only thing I didn't like about it is I had to spend to much time trying to control the throttle(especially on steep hillclimbs). So it wouldn't loop out. However now I would know to get a flywheel wieght or retard the timing a bit etc. The 250 will do you fine( I'm petite as well 225lbs. ) whichever you get you can always change the gearing or have the cylinder ported for what you want. And you know you'll have to change the susp. for your wieght on either. good luck

I'd recommend the 250 over the 500. If you really get into riding and want more then get the half liter big bore. Spend some bucks on the suspension and you'll be able to handle most anything you want.

If you want to MX at 270 lbs, don't even think about the little 250s. The 5 is the ****. I got one after 10 years of riding, and I got used to it pretty fast (I was 220, now 200 lbs.)

I tried a YZ250 for a year, and while it was a good handler and had reasonable power, I had to switch to a KTM 520 SX to get my fix. I would suggest one but there have been out so little time that I don't think any have yet dropped to the price range you suggest.
