I'm looking for an aftermarket pipe for an old, 1982, KDX 175 I have lying around. When I've searched on-line for such pipes, I've found pipes going back only as far as the 1983 KDX 200.

At buykawasaki.com, the main part number for my bike's pipe is 18002. It then has a "dash" (i.e., a "-") and another 4-digit number that differs depending upon whether the bike is an A1 vs. an A2 or A3. A search for the 1983 KDX 200 comes up with the same 18002 number, but different "dash" numbers (again, they depend on A1 vs. A2, but they don't match any of them for the 1982 bike).

When aftermarket companies list the models they have pipes for, they don't distinguish between A1 vs. A2, etc. Apparently, their pipes fit A1 and A2, despite the different "dash" numbers. Thus, I am wondering if the main 18002 number is the only thing I have to match and, accordingly, whether the 1983 200 pipe would fit my 1982 175. If so, do you think a pipe that enhances performance on the 200 engine would also do so on the 175 (like the FMF KG-30 works on both the 200 and the 225, despite the different engine sizes and different porting)?

Thanks!

Doesn't sound like a stupid question to me.

I've never had any luck getting information on a part without the numbers following the dash. I would imagine, then, the FIRST five digits to be worthless as far as application specifics go.

Good luck!

I suspected that the post-dash numbers were the ones that counted (you can always hope though ... right?).

I'll check out the pipe on ebay right now.

Thanks for the help.

Me and my cousin had 83' kdx200 and '82 kdx175 respectively at the same time during the '90s and I'm almost sure that the '83 wont fit the '82 175. Well the pipe might fit on the first part of the muffler but then I dont know if the connections on the frame (near the seat) could fit. Looking on parts diagrams at buykawasaki.com, it seems to me that the '82 175 A2 pipe is held with only one bolt while my '83 kdx200 has two. On the opposite, the '82 175 A3 is held by two bolts like my old '83 200 but they don't seem to be placed exactly the same so you might have to work a little to make it fit.

Hope that helps!
