Slowly but surely the Japanese are figuring out what the Euro companies have known for a while now, Supermoto is Cool, and will help sell bikes :)

A first attempt by Yamaha:

Not exactly the YZF450 for the street we were hoping for but it's a start. ;)

It is a shame they don't produce a street legal 450, be it YZF, or CRF, I'd buy one.

I'd gladly take a street YZF450 infact before an R1 or R6

Careful what you wish for Rich!

The new breed of thumpers are dynamite on the track.....
but the fuse may be a little too short for street duty.

Yeah, I wouldn't know anything about running a YZF on the street ;)

LOL, I can see it now. Cans of Nutec strategically placed all over northern IL and southern WI.

How many 400 mile days have you put on the CRF?

Even with the compression at 13.9:1 it has no problem running on pump premium with the intake lobe center at 105. Mine has the 400F steel intake valves and it's amazingly stout all things considered. I've been nothing but impressed with the job Yamaha did . :worship:

I'm waiting for my Electrex lighting coil to show up so I can finish streetifying the CRF so I'll let you know. :yikes: I've been eyeing that Buell City Cross down the street at Chicago Harley for those 400 mile days just in case ;)

I still have to finish making the new pipe and doing some wiring but it's just about ready to do a strafing run through the streets of Chicago.

Back to your original point, I tend to agree that most street riders wouldn't tolerate the maintenance that we assume comes with the territory. They would blow a nut if they had to put valves in their CRF450SM twice a year. :)
I'm pretty sure that's why yamaha based their SM bike on the proven TT600 design. AJ and I have talked time and again about building a street SM out of the XR650R BRP. It seems like it would be a great platform to work from if Honda wanted to do one.

Sherco 125 SM using a Yamaha TTR125 engine

Back to the original SM topic, here's a really slick little SuperMoto being built by Sherco (the trials bile guys) that uses a TTR125 engine. The TTR125 is a really nice little engine that is easy to hop up and runs forever. Good stuff.
