Hey all you out there with 8th-grade educations....

I was reading that around 1790 2 Frenchmen came up with the unit of measurement called a meter, which they based on being 1 ten-millionth the distance from the north pole to the equator, based along the meridian running through Paris, France.

As it turns out, we now know today (based on satellites) that the measurement they took in 1790 was only 2 millimeters off the actual distance.

How did those crafty Frenchmen do it? Humans hadn't even been to the north pole back then. Really long measuring tape?

Couldn't pass that, but I do know that

X=-b+-square root of b^2-4(a)(c)/2(a)

Does that count for anything?

I could have passed first part. But then my wife is a high school English and I have published a couple of short stories so the English part isn't as hard for me as for most. But 10 years ago before she graduated and before I started writing, I would have answered the whole first section with Huh?
Math, would have missed the first one, but the rest were pretty easy.. There are 160 Sq rods in a Sq Acre. Worked on a dairy farm in high school. Not sure why I remember that.
History, I would have done fair.
Orthography, Man, I helped my wife study for her linguistics class and I recognize all the terms, but can't remember what most of them mean.
Geography, I'd have done poor. When I play Trivial Prusuit it is always my worst catagory.

I actually learned how earlier this semester in my Physics class...but it was a side note in a 2 hour long lecture...I was too busy memorizing formulas to remember... :think: I'd be willing to bet that it had something to do with the Earth's relationship with the Moon or the Sun.

By the way...how many of you know what the name of our Moon is?
