The Jackpine...
So I decided to ride the Jackpine again this year, since it was a National and all, I thought I needed to attend and raise a little hell.
The last national I entered (Loose Moose in Marquette) defeated me miserably so revenge was on my mind.
I pre-registered and asked for an early minute...having experienced Michigan stuff quite a bit, I figured that that was the way to go.....soooo, I ended up with minute 16...that's right in front of the pros! Actually, thats right with the pros! Tim Taber was on my minute, Lafferty, Fredette, Hatch, Lykke, Bersano, and the likes were right behind me.
Holy crap...I'll see the pros ride all day...well maybe not. Maybe I'll just see them at resets, but still, they have to pass me many times, and I get to look up and watch them disappear, which should take all of...uhm...2 seconds. Man, I just don't get how these guys pick their lines through the woods, and how they go THAT fast!
At one point Steve Hatch passed me, or better, flew by me! He launched off a log and sailed by me (his back tire was at eye level), landed right in between 2 trees and then...he was gone. Unreal.
I'm not going to ramble on about the event, long story short, it was an excellent enduro, about 150 or so miles, the weather was perfect, the trail layout was great.
The Pros were most courteous when passing, no one ran me over, Tim Taber was a great guy to talk too. I admire Jeff Fredette's "cat like" moves, Lafferty's powerful style, and Hatch's brass balls.
I finished the enduro, which was all I could ask for, after getting stuck on the 1st mile in a deep swamp. After that I played catch up all day, and really never got quite into a groove. I ended up with a little techinical difficulty...a tree sappling wrapped itself around my rear brake, and was dead set on staying there and locking the rear wheel up for some time. Only after a long argument and some of my slickest wrestling moves, was I able to convince the young maple to leave me alone.
I appologize to all that had to get around me at one point or another...I appologize to the the guy that I passed, I didn't mean to...really!
The Lansing Motorcycle Club deserves a lot of credit for hosting this event.
