Well, as some of you know, I sold my 97 KX 250 on Saturday, and was very happy to see it go. I bought a CRF about 3 months ago, and had no need for the KX anymore. I put a new top end, new sprockets, graphics, and some other stuff on it to sale it a little faster. I found out 3 weeks ago that Im being laid off (Reduction in Force) from work due to budget cuts. I really needed to sale the KX so I could have a little backup cash in the case of it taking longer to get a job than Id like.
Saturday morning a guy called me about 9:30 am and wanted to come over to look at the bike. We agreed on 11:30 am after he went to the bank, and I got the bike out and started it up and made sure all was good. When he got to my house, he was impressed with it and thought it looked sharp. He hadnt ridden in a while, so I jumped on and tore down the street to go through all of the gears. He was satisfied with what he heard and saw and we came to an agreement on money. I wanted 2200.00, but he offered 2000.00, so I let it go for 2050.00. I was happy wit hthat and so was he and we loaded the bike up and he went on his way. I discussed giving him a bill of sale with the bike, as I had no MSO, but he said he had heard in OK it didnt matter if you got one or not, so we left it at that. I felt great after selling it.
Lets back up to March of 2002. I drove to Kansas to buy the KX in the first place. I cant remember the guys last name that I bought it from, but his first name was Rocky. I didnt get a BoS after buying the bike from him.
This morning I got a call from the OKC Police Dept. They said that the KX that I sold was stolen and had been reported stolen in Kansas in February of 2002. Ugggg. All that is going through my mind is that Im losing my job, I need the money, all the work and time I put in that bike, and losing my ass on it. It turns out that the guy that bought it was an MP at Tinker Air Force Base and he had a police buddy of his run the VIN to check it out.
When the police called me, they asked if I had a KX 250 with the serial of blah blah blah. I told them NO and that I had a Honda CRF, and that I had all of the papers from buying it. They then went into how the buyer ran the VIN, and it was stolen. I told them that I had no idea what they were talking about and that I never owned a KX. Was I wrong to do this? They cant prove that it was my bike as its not in my posession and the guy had no bill of sale from me.
The last thing that the detective told me was to bring the cash and myself to the station downtown before 5pm today and we could get it all worked out. I dont want to lose the 2050.00 bucks that I made from the sale. I need that money and times are tough. i really dont think they can prove it was mine or that I sold it to the Tinker AF guy. Its my word against his.
What do you all think? Should I just go down and explain where I bought it? Do you think they would believe me anyway?
