Threw chain, smashed case...

I threw the chain on my KX. It made short work of the flimsy stock case protector, right threw it and bashed a hole and crack in the case. There is a nub on the case right there that has something to do with the clutch actuation mechanism cause that doesn't disengage now either. My dealer is closed on Mondays so I am trying to find the case half on-line to get an idea what the price is. I bought the bike last fall so I'm sure nothing will be warrantied. I was running the chain too loose I believe was the cause. I am bummed mainly cause I'm afraid the bike will end up being down for a month or longer not to mention the cost!...

Try www.cycle-parts.com once you get a part number. If it's over $100 these guys are probably your best bet (they don't fill orders less than $100).

Thank You, they did have the part number 14001-1306. It looks like I have to buy the cases as a set, I spose so they match just right. $330, sounds bad but I was expecting $500 so believe it or not I actually feel better!

Good alloy welders can do wonders with broken cases-maybe worth asking around?

Sorry this happened to you. Would a stronger case protecter )aluminum) have helped? Not trying to be a wise ass. I aworry abot my bike doing the same thing. Was it the stock chain that did the damage?

Could you have done anything to prevent it?

Again, just trying to learn to protect myself.

Thanks for the replies. I had my local dealer order them for me. He originally quoted me $365. I told him the prices avaiable on the internet and we agreed at $300. I was running the chain too loose. The reason being is that I have run the chain too tight on this bike too. As the suspension compresses it seems the chain gets tighter. I guess I have to find the happy medium on the slack in the chain. The stock case protector is a (I think aluminum) plate that bolts on behind the plastic chain guard. The chain ripped right through the plate with no problems. I could post a pic of it tonight if you wanted. It was the worst case senario of course, I just landed off a uphill jump and had it wide open in 2nd gear when the chain flew off. I would certainly be interested in a aftermarket case protector if anyone makes one.

THis happend to my buddies CR250 it was like 4 weeks old and his insurance covered it. They bought all new plastic and parts. It was like $3600 in parts and labor the insurance paid.

I just called my dealer and my cases are in. I'm going to pick them up after work today. That was fast. It looks like it is going to be a rainy weekend for us here in Minnesota, good weather to work in the garage, I just may get this thing fixed sooner than expected.

Don't go buying new cases untill you've showed it to a good aluminium welder. I bought my old 98cr125 real cheap noing it had holed the case after a chain derailment. You could see the little bearing that the clutch lifter sits in and the clutch lifter rod. The chain also took off the mounting points for the chain guide. A mess. But i took it into my work, turned up some new mounting points in the lathe and set a piece of formed aluminium into the hole to the original shape. Then carefully welded all in pieces taking care not to get too much heat into the case. The Honda dealer couldn't believe the job i'd done and i've actually done some similiar alloy welding jobs for people since. But aside from the hole in your case, if the clutch isn't operating right, then the mechanisim could be irreversably damaged internaly and a new case could be the only answer

I got the bike back together with the new cases. I just haven't had time to work on it much and ended up finishing it last Saturday at 12:30am then climbing it the next day. Luckily I had a flywheel puller that fit it. I ordered new studs, seals and three bearings that I couldn't get out of the old cases. It really wasn't too bad of a motor to work on, being new, most everything came apart easily. The bike runs great, I don't have it completely set up for hillclimbing yet but I will be working on that more. Here's a couple pics of the bike from the hillclimb last Sunday.
