instead of mounting a computer/doubtful id need one anyways as ill always be late. i was thinking of just mounting a stop watch on the handlebar.at least that way i know how close to houring out i am,any ideas will that work
I raced (and rode) all last season with a cheap watch strapped to my crossbar pad. It worked great! For races, it was easy to set to key time and for fun riding, I always knew what time it was....
I'd make the route sheet into one big loop with clear tape (also around the crossbar), and I was good to go.
The watch and route sheet "method" really helped me to learn the rules of enduro, and let me concentrate on my riding, rather than trying to keep up with the computer.
The watch broke at the last race, though; so Santa put a new one in my stocking:cool:
Thorman,
I agree with Magoo. Keep it simple - wrist watch and route sheet. If you do hit a check early, it will be a learning experience. No big deal, even the fast riders do it (with a computer).
Go RIDE AND HAVE FUN!!! Do not worry about trophies....the goal should be to finish your first races.

Check out digital bicycle speedometers. I have one on my XL600 supermotard/streetrat. Has MPH, clock, stopwatch, max MPH, average MPH, total mileage, trip mileage and a few other do-dads. It's called Sigma Sport BC1200. Cheap and fun to play with when the road gets straight and boring.
i rode some 2 days back in the late 70's,but you didnt have to worry about burning a check,if your early you just waited til your minute to go thru.trophies=dust collectors.there are 8 enduros in dist 17 this year according to our dist president,i plan on riding all of them.seems alot easier than 26 mx events, although i plan on riding a few of those too.
i've been riding with my cheap ol' Timex Ironman on my bars for the past year and it works great. Since then i've never had to worry about being late coming home. Just make sure it's waterproof:)
hey thorman75 - I run two $5.00 clocks from Pep Boys on my handle bars - One on minutes and one on seconds. there mounted in a billet alum. dashboard from Scotts. I'm not fast enough to use a computer either!!
I've had no problems with either of them yet - I take the battery out at the end of the race and store them in a zip lock till the next race - Works for me- Hope this helps.
The thing about a computer is that it will help you ride faster, when you NEED to. It also makes an enduro alot more fun. You can play the game much easier.;)
aj borrowed jeff fredettes kdx a couple of years ago for a local enduro.jeff told him if its flashing, your behind, go faster,aj told me it was flashing the whole time. he got mad and turned it off.that was the race i rode a kx 500 in.and ran out of gas at 77 miles,23 to go and bluhhhhhh.as far as michigan my daughter lives in ann arbor so i guess ill have to start bringing the bike for visits.how about jackpine.2 years ago at the red bud grass race burleson told me to come up by him and ride,i can amagine the loop he'd lay out.every bit as bad or worse than fredette
Thorman, Are you planning for the spring Hill and Gully enduro? Ill be in the
"just gona try and finish" class. If were not in the same class, can we start on the same minute? BTW, I went out 2 times this week for an hour strait each time. I cant wait for spring!
Thorman, Jack Pine is August 4th. I am a member of the club that puts on the event. Come on up!!
We have group of trail riders who met on DRN. If you come to Ann Arbor with the bike, let us know. We will go for a ride!!
jackpine yeah id like that.a guy i used to race with here, he was from lansing illinois(raced hodakas of all things/his name is payne)told me to come up and try it.and yeah walt i told you id be racin hill and gully.ive got the lights for your kx.walt im gonna call you tonite.im off today ive got alot of running to do,service honda, extreme motorsports, fredette racing, capitol 1 is gonna love me:eek:ive seen the bares at roselawn(almost got sick)i heard morrison isnt running this year.wardy will have the event schedules at the dist awards banquet saturday
If your are just starting then use a watch and ride with someone faster, like everyone else said.
I'll be at Roselawn, lool me up (Black Ford cargo van, #24 KTM 200) and I can get you someone to ride with, I ride AA and Jeff never let's me sign up with anyone else anymore.
too old and broken up to ride with AA guys, those days are over.ill be riding 40B.i want a late minute too so you AA guys can knock down all the vines.me and mr walt will be on the same minute.too bad aj cant ride his 80.:ugg:
Just a side note on enduro clocks.I 'm sure it's been 20 yrs. ago but I think I remember an old- timer telling me (attributed to Burleson) that if you are going to carry a backup clock, you may as well carry a 3rd.Never knowing which of the 2 clocks is incorrect, you will need a 3rd.Just something that always stuck with me, but I rarely practiced. I only wish had more time to worry about the primary clock :D
The trailtech is super easy to mount and works like a charm. It serves as a speedometer, odometer and clock. The only down side is that the clock is to small to read when you are flying down the trail. The odometer can easily be advanced for resets and is easy to read.
I'm too cheap to spend $250+ on a computer when my brain can do the work for free so this is what I do. Before the race (using different colored highlighters) I highlight on the rollchart where the known checks & resets are and where the possibles might be. I use a green highlighter for the free sections (ride as fast I can), blue for the known checks, red for the possible checks and yellow for the resets. With a quick look at the rollchart I know what I need to do at every mile just by looking at the color.
$75 - trailtech
$20 - rollchart holder
$5 - pepboys backup clock
$0 - highlighters (free from the office)
