I was reading that Yamaha got feedback that their 1999 YZ250 had the bars to close to the rider so they changed them in later years. What years did they actually move the top triple clamp bar mounts forward and what of these years with the new change will fit my 99.
I can't afford new aftermarkets right now and there are deals on stock uppers out there.
Also who sells bar risers; manufacturers and stores for stock triple clamps?
'00 to '03 have diferent top triple clamps, Stockers are expensive im sure you cant buy a single after market top clamp for less then what a stock one costs. Unless Your getting onle off a new yz250 the stock clamps are gonna cost you. Im not sure about bar rasers you might want to try factory connection.
ebay has a lot of deals that come up on stock top triple clamps. Some under $10.00US The problems is the dealers don't know what years will fit my 99 and move me the most forward. Anyone done the change to their top clamps with another stock newer model ?
Also looking at trying the Carmichael/Alessi mini bar bend Renthals. They are 118mm high and have a 42mm sweep - giving me more forward room and a bit more height. They are down to 740mm in length from the stock 802mm but that will be ok. (30 mm shorter per side will be better in the woods anyways)
The front # plate from a '99 will not fit the '00-'03 mount on the upper triple clamp without some type of modification. If you decide to use the # plate from a later model year, you'll have to change the front fender as well.
The only reason I know this is because I tried using a front fender off of my son's '01 125 (I like the style better) on my '99. It would not fit under the front # plate properly so I went to swap that out as well. The '96-'99 front # plate bolts on through the front -- the '00-'03 bolt through a molded on tab on the back of the number plate down from the top. It would probably be feasible to fabricate a small "L" bracket to bolt on the clamp and the fasten the front plate to that "L" bracket.
I've replaced my stock uppers on my '01 yz250 with those from an '02 yz250. Feels great stretched out!

I bought the bike used with yellow fenders and a scratched up plastic so I have recently just bought new blue fenders and a new white number plate. Because of this I will just fabricate an L bracket to make it fit - it will be hidden and is not a high stress area so I don't mind the home made approach.
I priced out stock clamps for a 98 wr 400 a couple of years back and it was 99$ new from the dealer when the cheapest aftermarket clamps where 149
$ and the bar clamps where another 40$-50$.
Another option would be to purchase the "universal" oversize bar adapters that mount on the stock triple clamp. Then go with something like the Renthal Fat Bars, 971 (Carmicheal) bend. This would give you little over 4 inches of rise and not be quite as narrow as the mini bars.
We did this on my sons CR80 when he had a quick growth spurt (5'4" to 5'9" in 6 months) and it worked really well. Fat Bars can be bought for about $60.00 and the adapters are $45.00 - $50.00.
That would do for height but the bars still need to go back some. Infact the sweep of the bars you mention are more than factory bars putting them closer to you. The newer years stock top triple clamps are 10 to 20mm further forward, which is good to start.
I think I will go with fat bars though, ebay has some good deals on packages or seperate universal 1 1/8 clamps and bars.
I think the more foreward the better. My bars are now in the + 20 position. Even my 5' 10" frame fits better on the bike now. I think it even handles better with the bars in this position.
