Tranny Problems

2005 YZ250 with 30 hours on it. Changed the tranny oil every 5 hours with Penzoil ATF Type F.


Ok heres the problem.

I went riding for about 30 minutes last night, just a quick spin. I clean it, lube it and change the oil before i put her in for the night.

Today I start it up, everything is fine at first. I start riding and it wont shift into second. So I give it a little yank with my hand and it budges. weird i thought.

So I shift into third, fine. but now it wont let me shift into fourth. I tried giving it a little yank, but i dont wana pull hard.

It downshifts fine, but the gears seem to be a little rougher when changing gears(1-3).

is my tranny shot? This bike is pretty much brand new, and i dont beat on the clutch or tranny.

Suggestions? thanks.

Maybe you should use the recommended 10w-40 oil, some like to use tranny fluid in there gear boxes, but as a mechanic, I won't use it in mine!! But that's just my two cents-With low hours your tranny should be fine.

but what should I do? I changed my oil just now, and there are some bigger or normal junks comming out with the oil. I have a magnetic oil plug, so I could see it all and it didn;t look good.

Should I try a diff oil? Would that help it maybe?

Yes you can run regular 10-40. I would dump the oil again and see if it has more chunks. Then I would pull the clutch and check all the plates for any broken or really beat clutch plates. If the clutch checks out ok then it's likely time to take a look at the tranny.

i cant stress this enough. Dont Use Tranny fluid ATF as gear box oil/lube.. ATF is not a lube it is a hydraulic fluid.. It kills me when i hear people telling other people to use ATF as gear box oil seems to me all they care about is their clutches and not their gears,shift forks,and bearings. For the people who use ATF for better clutch action how about buying new clutches and or checking the basket for very bad grooves? If i was to use ATF i would mix it 50/50 with a good 50w oil so there is some lube at that point i think it could pass.
As someone said try putting real oil back in there to free things up but i think you may have bent a shift fork but it still may be ok to ride as long as you can get it to shift again.
As for myself i use 50w oil i think that 10w30 or 10w40 is to thin for long motos but its great for northen areas or not to fast riders.
Youll always hear people say how they ran ATF with no problems and all i say is they have played with fire. But iv seen peoples bikes run a whole day with no oil but does this mean we should lighted our loads and drop the oil to save a few pounds?

I ran ATF type F in this TM 85 I had once for maybe an hour never ever ever ever again it was harder to shift plus when I changed the oil it was burnt if it was so awesome then your manual would say it was okay to use it. At the least you should run 10w 40 like it says, I always run maxima or the bel ray 80 wt and I have no tranny or clutch issue's.

Well, I am NOT an ATF fan ( have used Bel-Ray 80W tranny oil since the 1980's) but in 30 hours ATF or most any oil shouldn't cause that type of issue if changed every 5 hours.

What type of "chunks" did you see in the oil? Are they metallic ?

Yes, they were metallic, but there were like 2 bigger size junks i could actually hold onto im my hand prolly about -- <--- that big.

Make sure when you check the clutch you inspect the basket and hub as well.

Would you recommend me purchasing a clymers manual? This would be my first time opening my clutch up. :think:

What kinda things would i be looking for on the basket and plates?

Don't know about a Clymers manual, haven't lookd at one in years; but I would have a Yamaha manual if you can get one as they have everything you would need.

Ditto on the Yamaha manual. I wish our Suzuki manuals were half as good as the Yammie manuals. See your nearest dealer. Pretty straight forward to remove the clutch. Dumping the oil is easier but not completely necessary if you lay the bike on it's left side. An impact gun will make the job much easier otherwise you will need a clutch holder or a method of securing the clutch to break the nut free on the basket. Just pay attention to everything as you remove it, including any ball bearings on the pushrod and the location of any spacers.

Id like to see a picture of these chunks. i wonder it you spun a circlip off of a shaft or broke a washer off. this would make your gears work all out of wack

I also own a 2005 YZ250. I have about 15 hours on mine. Its starting to get real hard to shift out of gear, especially 3rd under heavy power. After checking around, everyone is saying run semi-synthetic 4 stroke Yamalube 10w-50. This is what I was told actually comes in the bike from the factory. Either way, I changed the oil with this stuff and the bike shifts fine, but as it gets dirty it starts to get hard to shift again, about 5 rides. I don't know much about oils so I posted about it but nobody replied.

I would love to know what these chunks are that are coming out. I wonder if thats next for me.

Ok, it's still not shifting right.

What's the ballpark price figure i cant expect for a dealer to replace my gear?
