I am getting back into riding after a long layoff and need some input on the right bikes for my son (10Yr) and I. I have been looking at the TTR's, 125 for him and 225 for me. What is your thought? I think the 125 will work well for him to learn on, but will the 225 provide me with good power? We will spend most of our time in the woods instead of on a track.

The 125 is a great bike. My wife loves hers and has enough power to haul me around. I am not sure about the 225. from what I have seen I would look at something else. They are heavy and they dont have alot of suspension. They alos look funny to me, long and low. You might want to try a XR200 they are about the same price.

Why not an XR 250? Not a bad all-around bike, lighter than the 225, no e-start, but waaayyy more power, and even semi-competitive if you spend some money.

TTR125 is good bet for your son. Very reliable and further along than other competing models currently available. TTR225 is of old vintage, Yamaha keeps it in line as a low cost entry model. If you can spring maybe $1500 more you can get into some nicer options that you would probably be much happier with when your riding level progresses. Barring that I think I would look for good used bike as an alternative.

Thanks for the input. I asked the same question to the Enduro guys and got similar responses. Any input on compairing the TTR 125 to the XR 100?

The TTR would kick the XR’s rear end. The XRs are bulletproof and will last forever, but they’re down on power and limited on suspension.

TTR 225's are weak.
Look at either a TTR 250 or a Suzuki DRZ 250.
Both of these are based off of japanese "home" market dualsports and are very reliable.
My nephew in Hong Kong has a 96 DR 250RR (same as DRZ) that he uses as basic transportation and has done approx 80,000 kilometers (around 50k miles) with no problems, and I know that he does not take good care of it.

If you don't mind green, I've heard good things about the KLX. They're not really race bikes but plenty strong and smooth and reliable for the trail rider. Bbbom might still have hers for sale, and it's in pristine condition. Bbbom? You still got that thing?
