Under Jersey Chest Protectors?

I've never used a chest protector of any kind. For years I have done quite a bit of trail riding and never seen the need since many people claim they don't really help you when you fall. I've also done some track riding and still never got around to getting a chest protector of any kind. My standard operating procedure on the track is to take the inside line when I'm in a crowd to minimize a roost pelting.

This plan works usually, but sometimes I get lit up. The new 450cc thumpers are really good at hammering me with their roost.

That said... I've decided it's time to use some protection. How do the under jersey chest protectors compare to the standard style? I've noticed the prices are generally cheaper for the under-protectors.

Primary considerations IMO being:

How well do they deflect the roost?
Is the coverage the same?
Generally, how durable are they?
How well does either cushion a fall?
How much restriction of movement
I live in AZ. Is one "hotter" than the other?
Any other functional differences would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hey a fellow Arizonan, I tried the fox under jersey and found that it does help with the roost issues, but as for the heat issues in AZ way to hot for me to handle. I recently switched to a Thor Force which I love, I dont even know its on half the time and it has a nice spinal protection feature as well. Worth the high price tag in my book.
