Using Insulation as Silencer Packing?

Would this really work? Iv'e heard from posts of this site that people do do this, but would it really decrease the sound output of my bike? y bike is sounding loud now, and I want to be a part of keeping the noise level in bikes down. If insulation is not a good choice, however, I will order some FMF Packing from RMMC. The reason im in kind of a rush is because I ride very often (almost every day) and don't want my riding area closed due to noise. Thanks for all the help.

Insulation is a good way to go......Cheaper and no probs. Packing is the same stuff really just marketed as better. I recently repacked mine and what an improvement! The reason it gets louder is the spooge build up in the silencer. A caked silencer is like a solid tube allowing noise through. Go to home depot and just grab a pack of insulation and you will hafe a lifetime supply! R factor is not an issue. Personally I just ysed R-19 with no Vapor Barrier.

I have never used insulation for my bike but I would think It would all just blow out in about 1 moto. If you are looking to quiet your bike down, I would recommend the FMF four stroke silencer packing.

all i've ever used is insulation... . it works great... lasts a while... although i don't notice much (if any) noise difference between when its old and when i change it.

I use it regularly. Can't tell the difference between it and FMF in sound or wear. Don't worry, it won't blow out.

FMF silencer packing has increased HP by atleast .025! (Dyno tested!) haha all the expensive silencer packing is a joke. FMF silencer packing here goes for $12 for a bag good for only one silencer. Insulation might work good but I haven't used it tho cause I just stick with O'Neal packing at $6 a bag.

I buy the FMF stuff for 12$ a bag as well, but I can do two KDX silencers (long) with it. I can't notice any difference at all with new packing in. Maybe I am not wrapping it tight enough.

In the tips section in a mag. I read that you should wrap silencer packing as tight as you can for more power, but the trade off is its louder.I can understand seeing an increase in power because the exhaust gasses are directed more efficiantly, but I don't think a dyno can accurately measure down to .025 horsepower. When I went to my local dealer they reccomended the FMF fourstroke packing. It is different from standard packing,as it is woven.

Ok here’s my spin on the subject, first of all good on ya for caring, so many plonkers don’t.

I freshly repacked a roadrace silencer with cleverly packaged insulation from the local muffler manufacturer.

Had a stationary soundcheck at the track & it failed. Quickly repacked it with some Daytona woven mat/wool & it passed, 2 or 3dB quieter.

It really boils down to how often you want to repack your silencer and if you have a 2-stroke or a 4-stroke. Its true that most 2-stroke packings become saturated, oil soaked and clogged up. However I know some guys that run their bikes hard enough that they will actually blow it out of their 2-strokes. The high end packings in the $10.00 to $16.00 dollar range do seem to last longer and do a better job of absorbing sound. The 4-strokes are alot more picky. Regular insulation in a 4-stroke will blow out very very quickly. I have seen it blow out in one ride before. The high end stuff in my opinion pays off pretty quickly in the 4-strokes. I have done alot of testing with every brand and style out there. I think the Silent Sport (and the others that sell it under their own label) stuff is really over priced and over hyped. The high dollar FMF (high temp matting) stuff costs less than the "loose fill" stuff and seems to work better. It is a little to thick and has to high of density. Then there is the mineral based packings (its the greenish colored stuff) is the right density and thickness but it just does not last as long as the Silent Sport (loose fill) or FMF (high temp fiberglass matting).

Now that I have rambled enough about this stuff. The most important thing to remember is that your bike makes more power, is less offensive and actually sounds better with a silencer that has been recently repacked (with anything) than one that is blown out or competely oil soaked.

I know a guy in construction who gives me scrap insulation, I get several feet at a time. I have not found that it wears any quicker that anything else I have tried in the past, and I cant beat it for the price.
