Valve noise after adjusting

I adjusted the valves on my '01 520SX today. Now there seems to be alot of clatter. It was over due for the valve adjustment so I am wondering a couple things. I used .004 intake and .006 exhaust. I had a little drag on the feeler gauge and made sure the next size up wouldn't fit. Please tell me if I need to tighten them up a little or if this amount of noise is probably normal and I just haven't been hearing it for a long time because I hadn't adjusted them. Were your valves tight before you adjusted?? It could be that you adjusted them on TDC overlap and not TDC compression.

Thanks a lot. That must have been it because I made sure I was on compression, readjusted and now the noise is gone. I really appreciate the help and good advice.
