My son is outgrowing our YZ85. I would wait till next year to purchase a 144 if the odds were good that a factory would produce one. What are the chances? The other option is to get an 06 YZ125 and bore to 144. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I don't think that they will produce one.
1) The 144 isin't leagal for Pro racing.
2) The 144 isin't legal for schoolboy class either. (I dont think so anyway)

I wouldn't be suprised if KTM makes a cyl/piston kit, though. I don't really see any other manufacturers doing this. I'd say your best bet is to choose your favorite color and build one yourself. It would make more power being professionally ported than a factory 144 would anyway.

As of right now, the new 144 rule requires that any 144 be made from a homologated 125. If anyone does produce a factory 144 it would probably be KTM, and it would probably be delivered as a 125 with the parts necessary to convert it to a 144 included(as Masterphil said). Hopefully if an OEM did go through the trouble to do this, they would design the bike as a "true" 144(maybe with a longer stroke than a current 125, and not just an overbore). And just throw in a smaller piston and smaller bore cylinder so that it would technically be a 125. This is just a guess on my part. But, from my understanding, it's probably the only way around the rule as it is currently written.

Masterphil is right. The 144 is neither legal in AMA Pro Racing, nor the schoolboy class. I think they're in the process of writing the new rule book right now. So we should all know exactly what it says soon.

CJG is rigt that the bike has to start it's life as a 125, It's also my understanding that the new rule is you can only get to 144 by bore alone which was why the proposed limit of 150 didn't pass. Apparently at least one of the manufacturers couldn't get to 150 without increasing the stroke.

What would be ideal is to increase stroke by 4mm and bore by 4mm, (58mm bore 58.5mm stroke), at least this would keep the bore/stroke ratios the same. A 155 would absolutely be a 250F killer, though. One reason why we'll never see this happen. The 2-stroke NEED to stay at a disadvantage, otherwise noone will buy 4-strokes.

I would just build your own, as of now, you have to go through one of the aftermarket guys to get the pistons (Gorr, Max Power, etc). Wiseco will be offering replacement pistons as shelf stock items after the first of the year (Suzuki / KTM will be available next week). There is one catch though, the CR125 doesn't like to go to 58mm, things get thin where they shouldn't (which results in more difficult job, but not impossible), so it will be offered as as 57mm.

Good luck

That's true of the newer CR's by only just boring but you can get the rest of those CC's by stroking it and if ya don't race AMA who cares.

ur damn right why would the factories want the public to buy the cheaper twostroke when the consumer is willing to pay so much for a fourstroke. People have been brain washed into beliveing that the fourstoke has absolute advantage.
