water pump cover/impeller...does it work? why?

I bought a water pump cover the other day on ebay for 30.00 brand new, I installed it and it seemed to get a bit more over rev than usual, don't know if it was my imagination or not, but the stock cover had a 90 degree turn in it after the impeller, the aftermarket one was more gradual and smooth, this design allows up to 18% more flow in your cooling system, allowing the bike to run cooler, that's what I got out of it at least, plus they are actually made thinner than stock to get the cover away from the pipe and out of the way, don't know the significance of that one though,
