I recently used one to repair a stripped spark plug hole. Basically you tap out the hole, wind in what they call a heli-coil insert(basically rethreading the hole to a specific size) then replace your bolt/plug. I used it on an older bike a bought for my daughter. When I went to replace the plug, someone had already used a heli-coil before. So far it has worked well but I have a feeling when it's time to replace the plug (luckily its on an xr 80 which shouldn't need new plugs that often) I will either have to do something more permanent or repeat the process.
an insert (solid.. not the spring looking heli-coil) is a stronger unit, but requires additional steps (drill it out, countersink the hole, tap to insert OD size, screw in insert with tool that finishes the last few threads to lock it into place). They use em all the time on the studs holding the cylinders/heads on VW aircooled cases, and they are stronger than just the threaded case alone.
