What safety equipment is absolutely essential for kids new to motorcycling, and for an old man (me, 44) new to dirt bikes? When I bought the TT-R90 for my kids I also bought a mx helmet, gloves, and goggles. Are hiking boots and blue jeans adequate for playing around on a trail, or do I really need to invest in racing gear? With four kids and me, this could get expensive. Maybe I should just get an atv. You don’t even need a helmet to ride them! JUST KIDDING!!

I think something like this:
  1. Helmet
  2. Boots
  3. Chest Protector
  4. Goggles
  5. Pants
  6. Gloves
  7. Belt
  8. Knee braces
  9. Back Brace
  10. Jersey
    [/list=1]
    What did I miss?
The way I picture it is that a little more $$$ spent on gear is better than $$$ spent on surgery, recovery, time out of work, time NOT riding, and all that other stuff.
The first three are the bare minimum I would want to go riding in. The more the better!
    Have Fun;)

I use all that stuff Jh85 said except no back or knee braces. I do use knee pads and elbow pads, though.

Don't skimp on any safety equipment.

DEFINITELY get some good boots (Alpinestars). You mess up an ankle/foot it will never be the same again.

Don't forget the bubble wrap! !;) Just kidding - no JH85 has the right idea, expect I would go with the first 6 myself. I also wear one knee brace. I don't use elbow braces on the track, but I do on the trail.

Hiking boots and jeans are no not as good of match against gravity and speed as kevlar and real mC boots.

All of it is the best answer. Better to protect yourself and set the example for your kids than to risk an injury, or shorten a day of quality time with them. Check out www.ridegear.com and click the outlet link. You'll find some great deals on jerseys and pants there.. (A whole Shift outfit for around 50.00)

I agree with Jh85 except I'd put goggles up there with the helmet - can't ride well if you can't see.

I'd also stick knee/shin guards and elbow guards in that list before mx pants.

It is expensive to outfit everyone but if you look around you can find closeouts, discounts and used equipment.

We only have 3 kids to outfit but 2 adults and we have to outfit everyone for bikes, sleds and jetski's so I feel your pain.

Handme downs are us!!! ;)

Helmet, goggles (don't want to lose an eye!) Mx boots (after I broke 3 toes on a tree root I found out how important they are) knee/shin pads (you can get a good cheep pair for about $15).

I'd like to have a chest protector but I have'nt gotten around to it yet. I'll probably end up getting one after I bust a rib or collar bone.

I would'nt spend money on a jersey or riding pants until i got the hard pieces first.

Dress to crash, not to ride. When you are done getting all of your gear on, take a look at what parts of your body are "exposed" yet. Never fails, that will be the injured part (not if) when you have a mishap. Good luck. Just make the kids safe first.

With that all said I think it should be about covered.
Get everything you can and dress for the crash.

Jewell, I waited till I broke 3 ribs before I bought the chest protector. I wish I had bought the chest protector before the big crash.:ugg:

i just started riding 3 months ago, and all i wear is a helmet, bluejeans, walmart jersey:confused: and work boots. my sister has a tt-r90, i got a TT-R125L and the only crashes we had waz when we take corners too fast and dump the bike over. dont know about u though, u have 4 kids to keep an eye on, so id get helmet, goggles, and boots unless ur gonna race, but they rnt gonna race much with a TT-R90(slow!:p ) well,g2g laterz!

I would not let my little guy ride without a chest protector. Besides the obvious....Helmet, boots and gloves, the chest protector will protect him from those handle bars and any other getoffs that could cause blunt trauma to the torso. Wife is a doc and she will not let him ride without those minimums. Good luck and be safe.

Definitely get boots, higher quality are better, by far. I know it will cost a lot, but it's definitely worth it, also, many things can be bought second hand. I also find knee pads to be very useful. I know for sure that I would have cracked my knee cap on more than one occasion had I not been wearing knee pads. Get as much protective gear as you can.

Twin Cam Tom: All of it is not absolutely essential. Step Up is right-besides the obvious helmet, boots, gloves, a chest protector is essential. My chest protector has saved me from the most injuries above the waist. My knee cups and boots below the waist. Knee braces, neck pads, elbow pads are nice but not essential.

Dont forget the handlebar mounted airbag,
and the kevlar/titanium side guard beams...............

Good Hemet.
Goggles.
Gloves (to prevent "riders thumb").
Boots. (HD workboot have been good to me.)
Longsleeve t-shirt (summer) or sweatshirt / jacket (winter).
(same thing as a jersey, but you dont look like your trying to be J McGrath)
Heavy jeans.
These should be fine for cowtrailing.
If they are getting on the overloaded MX wagon though better get full gear.
