What will it take to get an 04CR250 on par with 05's?

My local honda dealer still has a couple 04CR250's in stock as well as 05's. I know that I will be able to get a good deal on either one of these bikes. What are the major differences between the 04 and 05 with regards to the handling and engine? If I sent the 04 cyl to EG, could it be made to run with the 05's power wise? How much do you think that I should be able to get the 04 for? What have you all paid for your 05's?

even if you save $1000 on the new 04, you will more than likely loose that when you come to sell it.

By the sounds of it, the 05 is much better than the 04 in all number of ways.

I've been working on a '04CR250 developing jetting kits for the Mikuni TMX carburetors. The '04 has good potential with improved jetting. The CR made 47HP on the dyno and is more responsive yet with Vforce3 reeds. The carburetors are identical on the '04 and '05. I think the '04 CR's are a great value as leftover models.

see- Dyno Runs and CR250R on the Dyno

The CR250R jetting kit has 2 needles (richer and leaner) which are a triple taper design similar to Keihin PWK carburetors.

Yes it can be made to be more powerful than the 05'..I don't know about EG porting on the 04' but I have ridden a friends Varner modified 04' CR250 and I'm pretty sure there isn't a stock 250cc bike that can touch it powerwise...It's so strong in fact that my buddy came back from the track the other day and said he has to gear it taller because of the added power.

you wanted prices. I got my 2004 CR250 at a local bike store. It cost me $5700 plus tax, which would be $6899. It wasnt a bad deal. My dad's friend has a 2001 KX250, bored out a bit, and he took my bike for a ride, and he notices the difference of power. He says mine has more response. I dont no about that 05's but I am sure happy with the 04.

Man Riding Red that is crazy. you paid more for your 04 than I did for my 05 CR. which by the way runs and handles great. I am going to get it jetted this weekend. Got some jets from JD jetting. If the rain will hold off long enough that is. Ride long and prosper.

I put a Boyesen Rad Array, FMF Fatty, and iCAT on my 04. It was also re-jetted by a friend. She rips when jetted properly. I would love to compare it to a 05 with similiar bolt-on mods.......

A JD Kit. I followed the directions about the main, pilot, and AS. It runs great using 94 octane gas, but would rip with better gas. I live in MI at about 780ft. ZOOM ZOOM!

We parked next to a guy at the practice track a few weeks ago who had traded his 04 for an 05. He thought the 04 was better and wished he'd kept it.

The CR gets a lot of bad press because of the engine, but it really is a slick bike. I cannot say it is better than every other bike ( I do not have the personal experience), but with the proper mods it really moves.

BTW what did the person at the practice track like about the 04

Go with the '05. It is much better in stock form than the '04. Boyesen's had both and the '05 w/just a RAD Valve and the right jetting was head & shoulders over their '04 that was ported/crank stuffed/Rad valved etc etc.
You should be able to get a good/great deal on an '05 leftover...no one is buying them & Honda has a $500 cash incentive to the dealers. If they sell you one for $4800 they still cover their costs!

I rode a 04 that had about 5 rides on it total. Still bone stock and new feeling and looking. The bike handled good and felt good but the motor was majorly lacking. I have seen bikes from the early 80's that had more power. It might had dyno'ed at 47 HP but I couldnt feel much more then 38 or 40 on the track. I tried revving it, tried torqueing it and tried begging it but still no real power. It made my 06 YZ250 feel like it was twice the displacement.

I hear the major problem with the CR is the crankcase volume is too great. And basicly to get it to feel like other modern 250's it will need to be filled to boost the pre-compression.

See the dip in the torque curve at 5K on the JD dyno chart? Thats the problem with the 04, the 05 doesn't do that.

I would get the 05 for sure Its a nice bike.

My pick for best in class for 05/06 is either the KX or the RM. I've spent quite a bit of time lately on the 06 KX 250 and have been very impressed. And im not a fan of the green at all!

I agree. You should get the '05 (or an '06). Much stronger engine than the '04. There are many differences b/t the '04 and '05 motors, right down to the crankcases.

Yes, if you don't mind spending time and money getting the Kayaba suspension to feel like Showa stuff. See the many threads on here about that subject.

The 06 YZ250 has some of the best stock suspension you will ride on and yes better than the honda.
