when should I get a new helmet?

I was just thinking and from what I have read here I think it is about time I get a new helmet.
what do you guys think?
my helmet is 4 years old and has no cracking to the shell but on the inside some of the styrofoam is packed down.
I have had a few hard crashes were I hitt my head
non knocked me out but I was a little dizzy one
the rest were just headaches.
another thing that I think is bad about my helmet is how loose it is
I can stick both hands up beside my face and when I'm going fast it catches the wind and turns my head
my parents realy take safety as top priority but some of my dads friends that ride said that a helmet is ok until the shell is broken.
but they also say filter oil is pointless.
are they right I don't think they sound like people I can belive.
thanx

Wizard, get a new helmet, if the styrofoam is packed then it is weakened and less protective in that area of the lining. If the helmet moves on your head it could potentially break your neck in a crash if it were to twist sideways while your head did not! I work in a bike shop and it really bugs me when a parent wants to buy a kid a helmet too big so that he's got growing room. I usually tell them he'd be better off without it as to have it to big, what if it slips down and blocks vision and they run into a tree or the house or a ditch. A helmet is nothing to mess around with, get one that fits you properly and that has not suffered too many crashes. I have a custom painted Shoei VFX-2 that just sits on the shelf now because I crashed in it last year and suffered a concussion. The paint still looks good on the outside, but its just a show piece now.

1 new helmet = $200 to $600
1 new head to put in helmet = priceless

If this isn't clear enough you probibly can get by with a styrofoam cooler.

Do as Patman says and we'll spare you the wrath of not oiling filters. Please tell us you will never take their advise.

Any packing of the styrofoam means that lid is history. My brother just rung his bell wearing his Shoei FX-2, and it did chip the paint pretty good. After seeing his problem, I figure I should probably cough up the dough and buy myself a new lid as well, since age (not impacts) has probably compromised my Arai.

Now, I just have to decide which one . . . :think (And come up with a new paint job!)
