i am a woods/trail rider with a pokey old xr250. I would like to give the local mx track a shot and i would also like to get a bike that can do the trails in a pinch(some torque). i am about 150lbs and i think a 125 2stroke would work for me and they are prety cheep. i love the looks of the 99yz, any sugestions on which one(yz, cr, sx, kx) has the most low end so that it could be used in the trees if i needed to.

thanks

I'd go with the YZ as my first choice the RM as my second choice in terms of bottom end performance the KX would be my 3rd choice with the ktm 4th and the CR last. But a 125 2 stroke won't hook up on the bottom like your XR does I hope your good with clutching :)

I'm definitely too beefy to define any 125 as torquey but of the ones I've played on the 98 or 99 YZ has the most down low. My buddies KTM is also a hoot to ride but it is more mid to top I guess.Have fun and use that left hand well.

I would recommend a '97-'00 YZ 125 for most low end (the bike has smooth all around power).

wow, thats 3 for 3 on the yz, i love the way the 99's and newer look, i am not sure what they look like before 99, is 98 or even 97 the same dark blue with white color? I love my xr on the hills, i have hoped it up some and it loves to climb. i want to get more agressive and try some motocross and it doesn't have a chance out there. thanks for your replies

parish8,
I really like the power usage of the '99 yz125. It has a great low end, for a 2-stroke. Thing is, you won't find a 2 stroke bike that will be like riding a 4. The beast doesn't exist. (KTM 380sx riders may disagree)

You will be happy riding any two-stroke bike, they are great fun. I happen to love the top end zing of my KTM 125, but it requires alot of clutch fanning and needs a bit more finness in turns than the more tourqy bikes.

You will be happy with a '99+ yz, but be warned....hard riding of these bikes requires a bit more maintenance than other bikes. The '99 is prone to crank failures without proper maintenance, as well as quick turn-arounds on top ends.

well im not sure if its my bike or just in my head but my 01 cr 125 feels like a rocket and my 98 yz 144 feels like a mule compared to the cr (still very fast) but it doesnt feel any where near as fast. id say go with the cr.

I think the only choice you have is a ktm 125 exc if you want a bike for woods and mx. Am I wrong? Will the YZ be suitable for woods (supension & gearing)?
I think you need to decide. I would chose a YZ for mostly mx and ktm for mostly woods.
