Which way does front sprocket go on?

I have a 99 CR250 but forget which way the front sprocket was on there when I removed it. Does the spacer go closer to the engine or else face outwards?

In this drawing it looks like the high side of the sprocket is facing out.

Can you not tell from the wear pattern on the sprocket?
