I pulled the flywheel/stator cover off of my 97 with a 8oz steahly flywheel weight. The whole rotating assembly was coated with a white, chalky substance. What would that be? Is it supposed to be there?

Thanks

Will

That's what it is. As long as it's not to much moisture(clogged drain at base of the cover) then corrosion can incur. As long as there is no black graffite looking powder. That denotes wear of your brushes and future electrical problems. ;)

All of the KDX's I've seen have electronic ignitions. Only my 1971 Yamaha 175 CT1 had brushes.

I am a metallurgical engineer. The white powder is almost certainly oxidation of the coating on the flywheel and should be of no concern.
