After last years early and DEEP snow, I had pretty much decided to give it up till spring this winter. Well after 2 weeks of watching the Lions, plans have changed. Going to install the studded tires and hope mother nature gives us a good December for riding. Anyone up for a snow ride next weekend?

I'm going in for carpal tunnel surgery on my left hand Tuesday so after that once I heal I'll access the stiuation and maybe ride. I already had the right one done and thats doing well so I figure about 2-3 weeks recovery before I can ride. I agree after last winter I didn't want to any more, the snow was too deep.

The good news is I am pre entered for an Enduro on Jan 25 and March 1. So I have something to lok forward to.

I know you won't be riding around here this week. I just got done moving 8" of global warming this morning. I can never find Al Gore when there is snow shoveling to be done. :yikes:

:rotfl: Maybe he can explain why we have had three of the 10 snowiest Novembers on record here in the last 10 or so years.

Now they say that's a symptom of climate change aka global warming, but I think they full of you know what. Btw Al Gore's greenhous gas footprint is over 20x average and George Bush has a state of the art super energy efficient home. Go figure.

Doug Downer and DB rode the Grand Traverse North loop today. Average speed 4.4 mph and neither are scheduling a return trip. Snow got to deep to fast. :bang:

Common Denny you know you wanna......

Rain be damned. I had to get out. Wife is baking cookies and the house reekes of all kinds of things that are baaaad to my diet. So outta the house I go.

Trails were trashed. Snow was wet and heavy. I could only ride part of the south loop. North loop was quaded out and unridable. Parts of the south loop were sledded out and horrible to ride.

Aside from my $300 rear tire starting to come apart already (that just sucks ) I had a good time. Was soaked thru and frozen to the bone when I was done. Nothing that a 1/2 hour steaming hot shower wont fix though.

Snow looks to be perfect. Sorry I missed it. :coocoo: Mine just went into the basement for a winter tear down. Bike doesn't need it but I do. Going to be a looong winter.
Whats going on with the rear tire?

You should have gotten that track and ski set-up. ;) You're crazy enough to get PLENTY of use out of it. It's going on my Christmas list, for next year.

Snow wasn't that good. Wet and heavy. I was soaked in 10 miles. Big water holes in the trail that give ya a big soaking.

Rear tire is a Michilin I got from Lansing Cycle. Studs are starting to lay over and a few are pulling out. This is the 2nd ride. Now granted I was flogging the hell out of it trying to keep it moving in that slop.

Thanks for posting the pictures of your ride last Sunday. My bike isn't ready just yet but I'll be game for trying some snow riding this season. Let me know when you're going again... (fritz@dcpah.msu.edu)

Ride2live - the fastest guy through the woods on two wheels in the snow.

I think last time I rode with him he passed Mastin, Dusendang and Keen.

Ice Riding/Racing

So does anyone here do any ice riding? Frozen lakes, ponds etc.

I used to go a few times a winter, but the group fell apart. I especially miss the guys with the quad/plow setup. So setting up my own track is out of the question anymore.

There is usualy some ice racing / play riding going on around the Muskegon area once the ice forms. There are a lot of ice riders in the Muskegon Motorcycle club. My boy and I usualy show up at there events so the kid can race the guest class (I just spectate as I dont have ice tires) They dont seem to mind us there.

You aint lying there. That man can move thru the snow. Rode Caberfae with him and a friend late January a few years back and was amazed at how he gets thru the snow.

..so is it possible to make a quasi-decent set of snow tires with a cordless screwdriver and a box of 800 machine screws?

Not really, but you'll be able to get through the light stuff without landing on you tail when you come across ice.
