i am 5'10' 140 pounds. Would this bike be to heavy for me to ride? would i be better off riding a yz250f.. I will be doing a little mx on weekends but trail riding other wise... I think both are great bikes and with a few mods to the wr250f it can be as fast as the yz250f. Anything would be appreciated thxx guys and gals..:)

are you dead set on a yamaha? if not look at the KDX's they can easily be changed around ( front fork springs) for MX and trail riding alike. the WR is also a very nice bike. its not that heavy (least it doesnt feel like it) at speed, but then again..im 6' 171lbs

yeah i know the kdx are great bikes and they can perforn very well with some mods but i am pretty dead set on yamaha. I have had only good things to say about them and there is really no need to change to any other manufacture. Also with the emmisions standards changing in 2006 i dont want to buy another bike. This bike whatever it will be will probably my bike for a while. Thanks

I ride a '01 WR250F and I love the bike. After doing the mods, most of which are free, it is an awesome machine. The WR doesn't feel too heavy although the tank is a little fat which makes it difficult to slide forward on the seat for turning. I am going to get a Clark tank so I still will have 3 gallons but it is slimmer. As far as speed goes do you mean acceleration on the track? The WR has a lot more top end speed do to the wide ratio tranny. I ride motocross a few times per year and the WR does fine. If I raced moto more I would get a YZ250F. But with the WR I got the wide ratio tranny, lights, 18 inch rear wheel, 3 gallon tank, and a spark arrestor.

yes i do mean acceleration. To me top end really doesnt matter here in the east. yeah i am going to do more mx than trail though. Even still i want a trail worthy machine and i hear the yz250f does trails pretty well also. Well thanks for you input. I will take into consideration.

Go for it!

I dont think it will be too heavy for you. I have ridden the 250F, and its a really fun bike to ride. I agree w/ Law Man about the tank. The keg style tank is a lot to haul around, so if you need the gals, get a Clarke or IMS tank. If you dont, do what I did and get the YZ tank. It will bolt right on, using all the existing hardware as well. Its a great bike, will cost less to maintain over the long haul, and can be mod'ed as you grow with it. Just make sure you do the free mods. Good luck!

ps- I rode a buds YZ timed WR, and it rips!

I was able to get both tank and seat for $200.
Keep an eye on ebay, and also go over to thumpertalk.com and post in the YZ/WR250 section. There may be one available. New ones on Ty's site are $220-ouch. Check it out:

I think cost wise your best bet is to try and find a used tank. Beware- some of them tend to crack.

Get the YZ instead of the WR, you'd be glad you did! Trail riding is no problem on the YZ, and MX is a ball! I think the YZ250F is one of the greatest play bikes made.

thanks all. i went to libbys yamaha here in c.t. they had both bikes in stock. the wr and the yzf. Here is what i thought. When i got on the YZF i thought the ergos were exellent and weight was no problem, and the guy even started it up for me, suprising but he did, and had no problem. the bike seemed to have exellent throttle response, for a 4 stroke, and he couldnt rev it to high b/c it was a new bike but the thing sounds awsome. As for the WR, i love the wide ratio tranny, as from what he was telling me, and says it is effortsless in the woods to ride, which i love. The ergos is where i had a problem though, coming off a 2-stroke i am used to sliding up on the seat alot pretty much on the gas tank. The Wr's gas tank is very bulbous like you said and it restricts me from moving up far enough for me to feel comfortable. I know there are gas tanks out there to fix this but after spending $6,000 on a bike i will not have an extra $300 to spend. He also started the wr up for me and the engine seemed pretty much the same as the YZF he just made sure to tell me to do the "Free mods" and ull be all set. As far as suspension i am on the light side 140 so i think the WR would be better for me in this category
Now which one am i going to choose. After all of this talk i went with the yz250f. I will be selling my yz125 very soon to put a deposit on a yz250f. I cant wait. Thanks for all your info guys.. :):)
