I was wondering if anyone knew of places that sold dirt bike engines & "engineless" dirtbikes seprately as I'm in the market for this combination for as cheap as possible. Haven't been able to find any online resources/classifieds selling these components. Thanks to all that help :).

OR if anyone could direct me to some plans & information on how to mount a small ~50-150cc motorcycle engine in the center triangle of a mountain bike bicycle frame, i'd be greatful. The bicycle I have has front & rear suspension, so the frame shouldn't crack. Thanks in advance.

You could try BBR. They must have tons of stuff left over from their conversions, and they sell the excess on their website if I'm not mistaken.

already checked bbr, they don't have separate xr200 engines or even cr125 chassis for sale unfortunately. The converted bikes they do have are WAY TOO expensive for me. The whole point of me doing the conversion is to learn more about dirt bikes and have a great bike for a cheaper price:D . I'm even considering an XR200 engine bored to 220-240, since it would be slightly lighter than the XR250 engine? Anyone else know where I could find these 2 bike essentials? Thanks.

I could be mistaken, but doesn't the XR250 use an external oil resevoir house in the XR frame? that would require bolting an external resevoir to the CR frame? The XR200 uses all the oil from the case, which would make for a simpler conversion. Just something else to consider, Good Luck :)

 need mooo info:scream: The real dilemma I'm having is just finding the parts. smb_racing, i'm also leaning towards an xr200 engine since other's have had success w/out cutting/modifying the downtube on a rolling 125 chassis. I figure if i can bore out the cylinder enough, get best pipe, high tooth sprocket, the bike will fly? since the xr200's had 6 gears if i remember correctly. I'm aiming to have this project done by end of spring LATEST that's IF i can find these dang parts  Does anyone think the bike could beat a yz250f? That would be supercool. cheers.:)

Check the following link. I've been kicking that idea around for a couple of years. I have found some likely candidates for the swap, but it took a while. I never had the time, space, or opportunity to try it, but someday I will.

Why not try the KDX motor in a MX frame?

I read some good posts on it. It sounds like the bike you will need.

If I remember correctly you want a bike that is good on trails and could do motocross as well. You wanted to ride for 9 hours a week, cheaply.

Fat chance on a MX motor but the KDX motors I have heard stories of 10,000 miles on the same piston!

So anyway if I were going to do it that is what I would do.

Search Hybrid 200 and you will see the posts! The motor is just as reliable as the XR with more of what you will want.

How is Austin. Man I miss Austin!

Take Care,

Riz

Back in the late '80s I stuck an old XR250 motor into a '89 RM250 chassis. It would have worked well except for my welding skills!!

Plenty of people over here have stuck all sorts of weird motors into motocross frames with varying results. The best I've seen have been with XR200 motors into KX80 big wheel and KX125 chassis. Another was with a guy who has put an XR250 motor into a KLX frame - this worked really well, and he has a much lighter and narrower bike out of it.

I guess because the perimeter frame gives extra room around the head, as well as the XR200 motor being light and fairly compact. These sort of projects all rely on having a good engineering solution between the rear motor mount and the swingarm pivot, as this is the most important engine mount and has a direct effect on the stiffness of the frame because the engine is a partly stressed component of the frame.

Theres no real reason that you can't end up with a very light and great handling bike that is cheap to build.

One place to look out for frames is from go-cart people, or people that have completely stuffed their motor and can't afford to fix it.

Keep an eye on E bay. I saw a late model CR 125 chassis up for auction a couple months back. The motor had been taken out for a shifter cart.;)

i found a 1990 kx125 bike for ~$600, but i'm worried about the condition of the frame. The seller said in ad "exellent condition," then admitted that the clutch needed to be changes & there was a dent in the rear rim. There was also a dent in the exhaust pipe. The bike was very clean/shiny, no dirt visible which is nice. But I'm wondering if i'll be paying $600 for a piece of junk rather than a workable hybrid. no, i can't try the bike out, it's in another state. advice?:think
What about a 1995 RM125 Rolling Chassis? Would these be any good to put an XR200/250 engine in them? thanks again.

They are a good little bike - just get rid of the CV carb, and put something better on, and they start a lot better. There are also plenty of aftermarket parts to make them go and handle pretty well. Good luck!
