What should I expect to pay for the YZ250 clutch basket, innner hub and friction plates? I just wasted my money on the Tusk Kit from Rocky mountain. Seems the aftermarket kits are also hit and miss. SO I'm gonna go stock since it lasted 2 years without any probs.

I bought some oem parts mailorder for my YZ. The inner hub was 80.00. I remember paying about 30 for the presure plate.

The basket was quite a lot of money so I bought a Hinson instead. The only tough part was removing the stock gear from the basket.

What kind of problems did you have with the tusk kit?

On my bike the Tusk kit fades real bad. I used it for the first time on some real gnarly single track stuff and it would fade before I could finish each section. Hillclimbs usually ended up leaving me with no clutch at all. Lever would go all the way to the bar and not disengage clutch. Bike would eventually stall. It cooled down in about 5-10 minutes and then it was ok again until the next tough section. Had to run the bike in the top end to avoid clutch fade. I haven't used the clutch on the track yet so I'm not sure if its as bad but I don't wanna find out. It made a fun weekend very frustrating.

Buddy has Tusk kit in his 2001 CR250 and has experienced no probs so maybe YZ's are harder on clutches but I have had heard similar stories about clutch fade.

Thx for the prices! I was hoping to get all new stuff but since the basket is more than Hinson one I will have to wait on that one. Any idea how much just the friction plates are?

That sucks! Your results are similar to others that I've heard... I have always run stock plates but I have never experienced clutch fade.

At least they don't slip LOL.

I ordered my plates from Powersports Pro. I remember them being about 8.00 each.

It was a good discount, but the place took ages to ship them. The local dealer wanted over 10.00 each...

thx thats not bad I guess....6 plates $60.

Is mailorder OEM parts better than going to dealer? Or is the savings minimal?

One of my local dealers is horrible. Plaza Cycle. Even though Studboy loves them (he is especially fond of Heather)....I cannot stand the place.

They wanted over 10.00 per plate and did not have them in stock. Since I was ordering I decided to go with PowerSports Pro. http://www.powersportspro.com/ They saved me about 20% even taking shipping into consideration. They did take forever to ship me my parts. It was a bit over 4 weeks.

I would have canceled the order, I was mad. Everytime I called them they were very cool and professional. These folks also knew a bunch about Yamaha parts. One guy spent 15 minutes telling me the difference between a 97 YZ 250 and a 98 YZ 250. No big deal except I was ordering in 2004. Thats an understatement. They were incredible. They ended up discounting my order, shipping it free and giving me in store credit. I really could not complain.

If your not in a hurry, go for it.

Did you take your clutch apart yet? I was hoping you had. There is a rod running through the case that applies the clutch. It can get beat up on the ends after it is used for some time. You can polish this rod and smooth the ends. I can describe it better in a PM. I watched Jeremy McGraths mechanic do this to his YZ at the supercross race in 2002. He was very cool and showed me just what to do. It is the first step to a great YZ 250 clutch. Since your in this allready, how is the thrust bearing and washers?

After that it would be nice to see a picture of your inner hub and clutch basket.

Well I don't have a digital camera so pictures are not gonna happen although I wish I could. I will take it apart sometime this week. All I did was take out the stock plates and put in new ones with new springs. I didn't really inspect anything cause I didn't know what I was looking at (1st time doing clutch). I did notice some very slight wear on the teeth of the inner hub but it wasn't grooved. I didn't really look at the clutch basket good. I don't know where that rod is at as I didn't take anything apart.

well I took the clutch apart again and the inner hub has grooves where the seperator plates touch. So I'll probably just replace this piece since it looks too grooved for a file.

I found the rod you were talking about but not sure what you meant by polishing it?

Rcannon - This rod, is it push rod 2? And if looking at the schematic, do you polish both ends?

What about to what degree do you polish the rod? And with what do you polish it?

Thanks

The key with the rod your talking about is to not have the ends look like a mushroom. Smooth them off until they dont.

As far a spolishing goes, the mothers aluminum polish is excellent.
