I,v found a 2004 kx250f and a 2005 kx250f both for around 1700, they both look to be in good condition, expect they both need new pistion and cylenders to be either replaced or re nikiciled. I would love to get a 290 kit in either of these, but my question is there a big diffrence between the 2004 or the 2005? Also is there any other problems with these model bikes, i thought the 2004 had transmission problems? Do you think this is worth the effort. Also i get dealer prices on all parts and can do the work myself
is it worth it?

ok, i did a search and i relize that this bike has some problems. But it seems as though for the 2005 model the tranmission and coolent problems r resolved. So i was thinking if i totaly redid the head with the best parts and i put a 290 kit in it and replaced the crank and bearings it would be a soild motor. what do you think, is there still design problems with the bottom end that would make the engine more likely to blow than any other 250f?

Yes. These bikes are not good candidates for the extra stress that comes with the heavier piston in the 290 kits.
