My riding buddies 01' KX will rev to the moon as soon as it starts up. From the time it starts to the time he can shut the choke down it is really high idling. Is there any tricks to cure this? Bike runs great and he blips the choke on/off a couple times till it doesn't need it anymore. Once off it idles great and runs great. Thanks

caused by a lean condition on initial start.

i asked the exact same question a few months back for my KX
some said it is the reed valve, ( chipped )
other said pilot jet issue.
but most said that their KX or RM did or does exactly the same.
mine does the same and it starts and runs great other wise.

I quit worrying about it,
here is the solution (suggested by others) that works for me:
once the bike starts hit the kill switch momenteraly to keep it from revving to the moon.
reach down and manipulate the choke (open and close half way ) for 5 seconds till the motor's urge to rev gives in :-)

in reality it is caused by a lean condition on initial start

My 98 KX250 does the same thing. I've never resolved it. I just live with it by fiddling with the choke as described herein. I like the kill switch method though. Think I'll try that next time.

Try leaning the bike over too the left, you'll see some fuel coming out of the vent hoses.. Then start it w/the choke on.. It may help.
