I went with my buddy on Friday to pick up his new KTM 400SX from none other than Guy Perrett, in Kamloops. What a character, great guy to meet! Anywho, I brought my TM and we spent the past two days breaking in our new bikes. I spent about 15 minutes aboard the KTM, so I have a bit of comparison fodder but I'll have more after tomorrow. Here are my initial impressions:
KTM is lighter
TM has mo powa'
KTM has better forks
TM has better shock
KTM is roomier
TM turns better
KTM is easier to move around on, very slim
TM is wider, footpegs are high, front end feels more planted
TM has more decelleration braking than the KTM
KTM is quiet, almost XR-quiet.
TM is loud, almost YZF-loud.
KTM comes with o-ring chain.
TM comes with glide plate.
KTM comes with side access air filter.
TM.. uh.. doesn't.. but lets not talk about that.
KTM has goofball fasteners
TM has goofball fasteners
KTM now has Acerbis riding pants burned onto the head pipe
TM now has ****-Tex jacket sleeve burned onto the head pipe
KTM came with briefcase, tool kit (sweet bottle opener), manual.
TM came with nothing, not even a triangle stand.
The TM is sexy, the KTM is handsome.
And the verdict is?
I still think I made the right choice, but I think I would have been just as happy if I had bought the KTM. Both bikes are excellent. If I were to do it again, I'd still buy the TM, I like it's attitude.
I'll update tomorrow night.
