Looking at the inside of my forks, there is a o-ring at the bottom of the plastic fork guide (on the damper rod). Does it go between the plastic guide and the nut below it, or does it go around the outside?
If it goes between, it seems that the torque spelled out in the manual would crush it.Manual calls out for 40 inch pounds.
Another question. 1999 Kawasaki's had progressively wound fork springs. I presume that they can be identified by coils that are spaced closer together at one end. Straight rate coils should be evenly spaced. Right?
P.S. What is the purpose of this o-ring? and is that some sort of valving just below the spring guide?

The o ring goes beneath the spring guide. You are right about the springs.Purpose of o ring is to annoy us all and spread when you tighten them to the correct torque no matter what you try.

The o-ring is there to allow you to tighten the jamnut down with out shaft blocks. This compresses and grips the plastic firmly. Without it the jamnut would come lose durring reasembly and give you incosistent fork lenght!
