I am trying to decide wether to buy a 250 or 125 ...both 2 stroke.

1) your physical size (both height and weight are important)
Height = 5'11 Weight = About 150lbs
2) How physical / aggressive are you ?
Very Physical and Aggresive

3) what do you plan to ride- MX/SX tracks, woods, fields with friends or ?????

Plan to ride on open land with 1 or 2 jumps .... Mainly vast peices of open dirt + Trails

4) Do you have any riding experience?
I have been riding for 10 years now

5) Do you think you will race ?
Only trails + Gruge races ... Not on a track
6) Are you mechanically inclined and will you be doing your own bike work?
Yes
7) Do YOU have a preferance to a brand/ motor choice (2 or 4 stroke)?
2 Stroke...Not RM
8) Do you have a dealer close by your home that you might use and what brand(s) does he carry?
NO
9) How much ($) do you plan to spend on a bike?
$1200
10) Do you live in California?
No
11) Your age?
16 years old
12) anything else that you think would help form an opinion

I have been riding for a long time... different cc bikes . But my own personal bike was a 2004 kx 85. I sold it about 10 months ago because i out grew it... Yesterday I rode a 2004 CR 125. It was kool but felt a bit slow on the top end. Thats why i am considering a 250...But i am kind of concerned that it may be tooo powerful for me to handle. I got used to the 125 very quickly and the acceleration was good.

For your weight, size, and price range I'd recommend a 125. 250's can be handled easily enough if you exercise throttle control, but they are generally out of your price range for a good 250 that isn't trashed.

I disagree with flyinbryan. If you are going to invest i would suggest a 250. Depending on the bike they are easy to get used to and a year from now you wont have to upsize. If you are agressive and your size is what you say than toe 125 would be too small for you especially in a few years.

if you have been riding for 10 years. And you are aggressive, then get a 250. Your making about the same jump i made. (only your kx85 had more go than my ke100) i love the power of my 250, and wouldn't consider anything less.

You sound a lot like i do. Aggressive, and ride pretty much what i do. so yeah get the 250.

The problem is the budget. I have not seen any 250's in this area that are worth anything for less than $1500. It is obviously your money though. Do with it what you wish.

Plus as always........ You all under estimate a 125. I have no problem getting around on mine and I'm 5'10" and 165lbs. Remember..... just because your ego needs a 250 doesnt' mean YOU need one.

250's while much more powerful do have a much easier to ride power curve. as long as you exercise some throttle control, till your used to the bike the 250 is fine, IMO. for the record a 250 MX bike was my first bike, i had no problems getting used to it.

My 250 is a wonderful beast, and a 250 is IMO better suited (with the extra bottom end torque) to trail riding than a 125. Being that you are 16, and have already mentioned grudge races, I do wonder if you have to self control to exercise good throttle control during the transition period.
Now, I do have a 15 yo riding buddy (he rides 125 and 250F) who tried out my bike a few weeks ago. He is a decent rider, and rides his bikes very hard. When he got off of my ride he said it was easy to get over jumps but scary coming out of corners. Ultimately, he loved it. This is what you must prepare yourself for if you go for the big bore (huge power to contain).

you would be smart to invest that money in a 250 because then you will never get bored of it. but then again your not going to find a lot of 250's for 1200 unless they are a decade or so old.

Well here in the Cayman Islands there are a few bikes which are inexpensive. And so I think i may buy locally as i will not have to worry about shipping and getting some old torn up bike that looks good in the picture. Also I am sorry but i didnt convert that figure to US$ ... That was in KY$....(Different Currency)

KY$1200 = US$1500

I would problably maximum spend about US$2000

Hello everyone, Just letting you guys know that i found some bike locally that were for sale. I really have 2 choices. Either a Yz 125 or a Kx 125 the YZ125 is a bit older model .... newer than 2001..

KX 125 is new maybe 2004 ... More expensive though...

YZ125 owner told me that the bike probably needs new front wheel bearings ... nothing else is wrong with it....Runs fine...

Anything else i should check ?

I heard a few things about the YZ125 ... at high speeds the front wheel starts to wobble a lot. Also you have to KICK the gear shifter into 1st gear ...

Do these sound like serious problems to fix myself?

Should I just look for aanother bike?

so you gave up on a 250? :coocoo:

you should save and invest in a bike that you will keep and ride for years. I have a feeling that you will grow out of the 125 and get hungry for more power.

I was content with my 125 until i rode a 250. bought one the next week.

I ride a KX, not for long though. From what I have read on this forum the best thing judge by is what is the closest dealer. Other than that they mostly say pick a color. Seems they are all pretty close to the same.

My first bike was a KTM 65
Then I had a KX85

Before the KTM 65 I learnt how to ride on my older brothers' KX 250. (without touching the ground ofcourse).

See my problem now Is I am wondering if I should get a 125 or a 250. People say that I will be bored with a 125 very easily but I am concered that maybe a 250 might be too big of a step, plus the majority of people have 125's and 85's around my Island and I dont think they will want to race me if I'm on a 250.

We don't have any tracks here on the Island, so its all Open Land Riding and a few jumps when we make them

I have about $2500 to spend so, I think I will be able to find a nice second hand bike.
