I just bought 87 cr500, got a good deal on it, but 5th gear doesn't work. It doesn't click into gear or freewheel. Nothing is there. Anyone have any ideas?
Are you sure your counting gears correctly? It should be 1 down, neutral then 2,3,4,5 (i.e. one down, four up).
If so, take the right side cover off and make sure the gear selector thing (dont know the official name, its got several pins on it and is rotated by the forkes on the other end of the shift shaft) isn't missing any pins. I suppose that if the right pin were broken you would have the trouble you describe. If this doesn't fix it and nothing is obviously wrong under the right cover, then you will have to split the cases.

btw the 87CR5 is an awsome bike - I used to have one, best motor of all the CR5's IMHO.
