been checking out some used bike for the nephew. He has some exp., still learning. He would be trail riding.

Found a very clean 98 rm125 that is basicaly in new condition. Would be a money saver. I know that I learned on an old 125, but couldn't help to think that smoother 200exc might be better.

What do you guys think? I haven't ridden a small smoker for some time myself. I just remember the big hit and trying to hold on. Any thoughts are appreciated.

well, back in the day (as i hear from oldguy, pokie, and the sort :p:)) the earlier 2strokes did not have powervalves and the power was like a light switch. i rode my friend's pro circuit KX125 and had no problem with it, though it did have a considerably harder hit than my "awesome" TT-R. :) let him ride it and if he likes it, let er rip! 'course, the 200exc WOULD have a more level powerband, and probably would suit him better in the woods. if you can, let him ride both bikes (or bikes similar) and see what he wants, then go from there. unless you want to suprise him on Christmas morning....

KTM baby!

1) MX 125 are the worst trail bikes you can possibly buy (new clutches and new top ends every other ride, harsh suspension, too tall gearing, low RPM stalling)

2) a KTM EXC 200 is ready to go (and go fast) down the trails. the reason they go fast is that they are EASY to ride and manage.

3) KTM beats the suzuki in quality and reliability (though the suzuki isn't bad)

4) on the other hand the RM might make an excellent "character builder" and so in the long run might be a better bike

The 200 is by far the better woods bike. It is the most four stroke like two stroke you will probably ever ride. Plenty of bottom power, light and quality built. I have used 2000-200 with 146 hrs on it for sale. Don't know your location but e-mail if your interested and I will send you particulars and pictures.

I do agree though, the 200 would be a better suited bike. However, beginning on a 125 would force him to become a better rider IMO, just like how they say people that start out driving manual transmissions in cars end up being better drivers(because of the throttle control/coordination required)

For someone still learning find a KDX. It will be a bit mellower for him to continue to learn and is easily upgraded as he gets faster. I hate to keep suggesting this bike over and over But a KDX is a good machine and i is cheap.
