Ol'89er where is it that I need to unplug the CDI? I haven't looked at it, but I'm guessing there's a plug up near the box...is this enough?

boomer.

Yes, simply unplug the connector at the box. You can leave the cdi box on the frame but, I usually remove it just to be on the safe side. Be sure that the guy you take it to has experience with welding motorcycle engine cases. It is a little harder than just welding pure aluminum and using too much heat can cause warpage.

Someone with experience should be able to weld it and grind and blend the welds where you can't even tell it was damaged. The missing sprocket cover mounting posts can be machined out of 6061 aluminum bar stock, threaded for the cover screws and welded in place of the broken ones. This would be stronger and easier than trying to piece the old posts back together.

The best part is, if the broken area is accessible you don't even have to take the engine out of the frame.
