This may be a dumb question, but I'm just getting back into the motorcycle business (ex-flattracker--now motorcrosser at age 40) and I have a question on cleaning my air filter:

What's wrong with cleaning with warm water and soap and then soaking in motor oil (10w30), then re-installing. Was I doing it wrong all those years ago?

Nothing really, there are just far better oils available for use on foam air cleaners. Air filter specific oils tend stay attached to the filter for longer periods and as a result tend to protect better over the long run.
From my experience engine oil tends to restrict air flow with modern foam filters, while the thin tacky air filter oils do not.
