rmx kid , where do you ride ? my mom lives up by burt lake so i ride around
indian river , gaylord , mancelona ,etc . i try to make a u.p. trip at least
once a year .
I use to ride around Gaylord, Cheboygan,Indian river but i have been going to canada alot to ride. I am going to try some up riding this year since i havent riden there much.
Right now the only avatage i see is improved fule milage. But the 4 storks sleds are only proforming like a 440 fan colled sled. which is about 40 horse and they are heavier. right now the high performance 500cc 2 stroke sleds are running about 95-100 horse power. the big muscle sleds are at about 150 to 160 hp. in my opion they will be great touring but for fast riding the 2 stroke is the only way to go. Things may change when as they devlop more 4 strokes for a snowmobile. but for now I dont think many people will buy them.
99 Indy 500, 700 miles, we also got a 93 Indy Trail Deluxe (a boat in the ditch, going soon:)) and a 72 polaris colt(fun to beat on) and thats what i do when there's snow on the ground, its the next best thing to dirt bikes.
My '02 Polaris X Edge 700(red) just came in. I was out of sledding for 10 years, went to Michigan last year (Hurley, Mi) a few times on my friends sled and man I am hooked again. There is nothing like doing 120 mph on a freshly groomed trail. Northern Wisconsin-Michigan area is great sledding. Right in the middle of the snow belt.
94Jag440 - mine
94Polaris IndyLite 250 - son's
74Scorpion LilWhip - daughter's
72Polaris TX 440 - death machine - goes fast with NO suspension and No handling
??440Phazer - Karl's
I'll take lightweight over speed anyday. We ride the same trails that we ride on bikes which means lots of narrow misses with trees. I always look forward to those first few rides when I keep pushing on the rear brake going down the hills!!
Had 1.5" of snow week before last! It melted but it is on it's way.
I have a xc 800, but I am toying with the idea of buying a pro X 440 and stuffing a 900+ cc big bore twin in it. I ride mostly in the U.P. of MI( Marquette).
Hello!
99 Polaris 600 RMK. Just got our first skiff of snow today. Don't know if its going to stay, I don't think I'm ready to put the 250F away yet!:(
Strach
Holy Cow we got alot of flatlanders in here!
2000 Yamaha Mountain Max 700-
Just got into it the last couple of years. Do alot of mountain riding and boondocking all over Washington and Oregon. I live right below St. Helens. Last year we got basically no snow so hopefully this year will be better.
Moto is still #1, though!
Four of them snow-sofas w/ skis here- All name brand: 00 XC500SP, 00XC440 Edge, 98 I500, and 98 Trail.
BTW, I'm with Traktor2; I'll take my bikes EVERYDAY over sleds!!! But, since 1/3+ of the year is snow season up here, and I can sled right out the garage door to 100's of miles of ditches and trails, I keep my own fleet. Also, Wifey likes to ride.
I may buy a new sled this year, at least new to me. I currently have a 93 Yamaha Exciter 570. It goes great, just want something with suspention. I rode a MXZx440 and a MX583 last year up in the U.P. Wow were they fun. A big +700cc would be fun, but I would rather have something light and quick that I can ride like my mx bike. My first choise would be the new Yamaha Viper. My wife wants a 2up and my 6yr old would go nuts with a 120cc mini.
I'm holding out though, I want to ride my bike some more this year.
I was at the snowmobile expo in Puyallup last weekend and got to see a Snow Hawk. Talk about cool. This thing is a motorcycle for the snow. It feels almost like an MX bike when you sit on it. Thye were showing a demo video of it and the rider was ripping it up. You can lay that thing over in corners just like a bike and he was throwing it sideways in the air! Just may be my next sled if they ever get into production.
I think the concept of the Snowhawk is cool but I'm doubtful that it will work very well is most conditions. I can't see it being too enjoyable on ice or hard packed wind blown snow or even on slopes. Just doesn't seem like it would have enough bite. I am curious about it however. I'd love to try one out. I think they retail for around $6000 which seems a bit high for a 500cc fan.
The other thing that I wonder about is mating a steering lingage to the forks. On a bike your weight is up near the front and the handlebars are on the triple clamps. That isn't the case with the Snowhawk. I wonder how well it handles? The only video I've seen is a guy riding around in loose powder snow. You guys all know how long untracked snow lasts. :)
The thing had a track on it that was tapered- about 2 1/2" in the center to about 1 1/2 on the outside. The video had a guy riding up medium hills in about 1' fresh powder. It also showed him riding in a snow field with alot of tracks, he seemed to have no problems. I'm don't think it would make a great MT sled but that wouldn't be what I would buy it for. He said a few companies have been working on them but have had trouble getting the rear suspension to work. The front han a linkage like a quad to a set of Paoli forks. They have done alot of testing to get it balanced, but I would have to ride one first for a while before I sheeled oput money for it.
