well, it looks like i will be doin this rebuild on my own after all.i have done all the routine maintainance on my bikes, just haven't gone into the engine on my own yet.as far as tools to measure parts what will i need and how much will they roughly cost? can i just take the cylinder to a shop and have them measure it so i know which size piston i will need?i would like to do it myself for the experience and so i can get it back together as soon as possible since i know how long things can take if i let a shop handle it.any tips on what to do and what not to do would be appreciated.i already have the service manual for it also.the bike which will be done is a 2001 cr125.also one extra ? my cr60 make a clicking or tapping sound when idling and it seems to go away or quiet once its warmed up.could this be piston slap? sorry for such a long post, any help would be appreciated.

You really don't need much other than the standard shop tools. If the cylinder is still in good shape (no flaking of the plating, or gouging from debris), you can just clean it up and drop in a new piston and ring.

Just order a piston (I would recommend Wiseco 676M05400 or 762M05400) and top end gasket kit and you should be on your way. I would recommend that you get a set of feeler gauges to check the ring end gap, but the piston should drop right in.

Good Luck,
Joe
