In order to save some cash, I've been running 10W-30 instead of the stuff the dealer sells. The KDX manual suggests running this, and I change the oil after every ride or two. Does anyone else do this?
Here is my latest oil recommendation (besides the usual "use what you like")...
Shell Rotella T Diesel Oil - 15W-40
It has an API service category of SL that is very hard to find these days, and get this, Shell actually recommends its use in wet clutch motorcycle engines. But here is the best news...it's less than $7 per GALLON at Wal-mart.
I also run 10w-30 only because its usually the only stuff we have around since thats what we run in our lawn mowers. So usually we buy 10w-30 by the boxes at farm and fleet and it lasts us a year. We do also have 10w-40 that we run in our trucks and cars. I have never tried running the 40 weight in our motorcycles though. I might try some of the 40 stuff sometime. What should I mix it with if I do run in, if I need to mix it at all?
From everything i've ever read - make sure that you are not using an oil the has an energy conservation rating (EC) in a motorcycle wet clutch. Most of the 10W-30's that i see are EC these days.
