Back-to-school Oklahoma ride

Hi all,

Before my sons are fully back into the school schedule, I want to do an overnight camp/ride in OK. I've haven't ridden in OK yet, but I understand there are some good places.

One guy I know has ridden in some good places near Cloudy, OK. Right now I'm tentatively looking at going Friday Aug 6. riding a little in the evening, and riding all day Saturday. We would probably leave Saturday evening.

If anyone else is interested in an overnighter in OK, let me know. It would be nice to have a small group of us.

You might think about the 500 in Stillwater or Draper in OKC.
Probably the best places in OK open to the public.

There is some nice camping at Lake McMurtry, just outside of Stillwater. Close proximity to the 500, Cooperland, and Red Bank. Quite a variety of riding with little travel once camp is set.

The Kiamichi forest out of Talihena, OK, is by far the best riding I've seen in OK. I might be up for a ride there.

Is the situation similar at Kiamichi? (Primitive camping, etc...) Do you need to buy some type of a permit?

Hook-ups :yeehaw: but there is plenty of grass as well for primitive use. You will need a permit for either.

I am already committed to meet Lou at a location to be determined that weekend ... darn it.

Check out the posting on Clancy's in Honobia (see below). You can find them on the internet. They have cabins for $75 - clean with hot water. Less work and more riding time. There is also plenty of primitive camping in the area along the river. Nice riding area for kids. It is all logging roads and trails.

I am down for a while or I would consider the trip with my boy. I fell off a shovel and tore some ligaments in the foot/ankle area. It will be a couple of months before I am ready to go.

It has to do with the county and Warehauser (spelling ?) owning most of the county. It was a registration for anyone (hunters and fisherman included) using the logging area. "

What dates are we thinking about? By the way, it's the Talimena State Park, near Talihina, OK. The riding can be pretty rocky, though, maybe not appropriate for small bikes or beginners. Or fat guys like me, but I try.

Was looking at Aug. 6,7, but now Aug. 13 & 14. My son's XR200R is in pieces awaiting new parts, and they won't arrive until late next week at best. I want all 3 of the smaller bikes running so I can take all my sons with me.

I'm trying to get directions to the riding areas near Cloudy, OK. I may not be clear on this, but it seems there was no cost to ride near there. I'd rather not pay $100 for permits (4 riders) right now. I'll see.

Also, the guy I know who rides near Cloudy has a young son who rides as well, so maybe it's good for novices.

Jim I've been to cloudy ain't much fun unless you like riding
on dirt roads .You might find a little trails but they don't last
maybe a mile or two . I've lived 45 minutes from there for about 14 years and only been there twice . Ain't worth paying
25.00 a year for . But I do like to fish up there at little river . The river has little brown bass . There fun to catch .

Well, Seldon has a couple of sons who aren't up to technical woods riding yet, so he may enjoy Cloudy.

Where to ride?

I'm still trying to get more details about the Cloudy area. I hope I've successfully attached a pic of an area outside Cloudy near an old abandoned still. This is where the guy I know has gone riding with his kids.

My 2 older sons are comfortable with most of Muenster, so I definitely want more than just dirt roads, but some easy roads or trails will also be good for my 11 year old.

Since it's just an over-nighter, I'd like to not have to drive more than 3+ hours to get there. Barnwell would be good, except it, and Muenster, are probably too hot to enjoy camping in August. Is it any cooler in SE Oklahoma?

Like I said all I've been up there is a couple of times . I've found a little of trails not much . Its only about 45minutes for me to get there from Powderly . Also you can get your permits at Walmart in Hugo . Also when you go up hwy 93 to Rattan and turn right on hwy 3 there are a couple of gasstations there and you can stop at one of them and get a map of there area of cloudy . I've beleave it called the three rivers map or something . Maybe you can get it at Wal Mart in Hugo . There is also a riding area in clayton ok . I used to have a brochure from there I'll see If I can find it . If I do any riding it will be only in the morning times or when it gets cooler . I remember when I was 18 I could ride all day when it was 99+ degrees hot and not even have water didn't even faze
me abit . It SUCKS getting older . When I'm Enduro_nut and JMD age I'll be all washed up . :nener:

No, it's really not any cooler in SE Oklahoma.....I'm only 35 miles or so from Cloudy and it's pretty much as hot here as it is there. Actually, it may be just a bit hotter there since they're about 500 feet closer to the sun on those hills. :laugh:

If I get my bike from SMS before Saturday that would be great . Ryan and his cousin Garret were wanting to ride this weekend to . Just depends on if they get my bike done . There ajusting the valves for me . I read that after breakend about a couple hundred miles you suppose to check them .
It probably has a 1000 or so miles on it . I'll let you know . :ride:

CDC...Have you been roosted lately????? :laugh: Have you forgotten about the new bike?? :)

He took the cast off...WOW, very weak and still swollen - prolly' another 1-2 weeks before I'm ready. He did say I could hit Colorado/N. Mexico at he end of August! :yeehaw:
