there is a weird noise coming from my cylinder. i i really dont know how to describe it. is this the 'pinging' or 'knocking' that ive heard of? detonation? also after im hard on the gas, with no throttle on at all with the clutch pulled in it wants to rev and stay there. it doesnt stop revving until i let out the clutch with brings it to idle. this could be because my throttle cable is messed up. me and my dad will be doing a top end rebuild this winter.

noise like detonation and runaway reving could be a sign of an air leak.

When you tear down the top end make sure you replace all the gaskets for the power valve covers and reed cage. Also inspect the reed cage boot real well for dry rot. Since your bike is a 2004 thats probably not the problem. Your problem is probably the cable or how it is routed from the carb to the throttle tube, make sure its not kinked.
