I'm wondering on the costs to turn an MX bike into a decent trail bike, vs buying a Trail bike to begin with.

I found an '02 WR426 that is being sold on a local forum, nicely done up with some aftermarket goodies. Good mechanical shape, and the seller is very well thought of/known on some local forums. Downside is that it's at the top end of what I want to spend (asking $4K).

I've found a few older MX bikes(mid 90's 250 2T's), in the $2-2800 range. How much would $$$ would I be looking to add all the goodies I'd be getting on a Trail bike (flywheel weights, lights, handguards, etc).

I would say build the 2 stroke up.
American prices
Lights=$84-150
Flywheel weight=$100-150
Skid plate=$60-75
Large Tank(IMS)=$230-300
Handgaurds=$39-70
Rad gaurds=$29-80
Chain Guide=$29-89
FMF Gnarly pipe=$229.99
Kick stand=$45-69
Auto Clutch=$419 (not nessiary)
Eric Gorr porting and head milling=$? dont know but do it.

So, here are some basic items to have (not all). I think you should do the 2 stroke because its easy to work on and light to ride in the trails.

Prices mostly come from http://www.steahlyoffroad.com/
and tank from http://offroad.parts-unlimited.com/14/204/2784337
