Buying On eBay

I was wondering if many of you have ever bought anything on ebay? Because I am thinking about buying some parts on there but how do you know the seller will actually send you the parts? If any of you could post your comments or concerns about ebay thant would be appreciated.

I just bought a triangle. I don't really know how you know that the person will ship your items. I read the feedback on that person and he had over 400 sells and like 3 or 4 negative comments, which all of them sounded like the buyer was just being unreasonable. So, I bought on good faith. But, I've only bought this one item. I'm sure there are several people on this forum that have a lot more experience with this sort of thing than I. Good luck!

Just be carefull that you read the full item description and the sellers ratings. Right now there is a guy on there selling the pictures he posted of a bike. He describes the bike as if it is for sale but if you get the stars out of your eyes and read he says the pictures only and not the bike are for sale. He has a $1225 bid for them- someone will be real surprised:(

I've bought and sold thousands of dollars worth of merchandise online. Quite a bit of it through Ebay. For the most part, everyone is on the up and up. But as the old guy said, read the ad carefully and look at the sellers feedback.

I've bought a lot of stuff on e-bay too. My pop has also bought and sold on e-bay. Usually what I do when I've won a bid, I send a check for the amount registered mail so I know It's recieved. They keep good tabs and watchful eye (e-bay) on the sellers accounts. You can also look for yourself on how good the seller is.

I have sold 2 bikes on ebay and purchased many items - check the feedback, that is a good indication of who the seller is. In addition only use registered mail.

I'll just second what everyone else has said. I've bought and sold numerous thing on ebay, mostly small stuff no more than $100. I did sell an iPaq on ebay for $575 but that's the largest deal I've had and I was the seller so I didn't have as much at risk. Most people seem to be honest enough. If you have any doubts don't bid. And don't forget you can email the seller to ask questions too.

I got screwed out of $110 by a guy in Oregon. I sent payment for a pair of vintage Z50 wheels and never received the goods. The guy claimed that he shipped them, but had no receipts or tracking numbers as proof. I filed a complaint with eBay, and turns out he screwed a couple of other people as well.

I filed a complaint with Online Fraud, and now I'm waiting for some kind of resolution.

I've had good luck with eBay other than that. Even so, if I don't get some kind of satisfaction from eBay regarding the wheel matter, I'm closing my account with them. It's too easy for someone to screw you.

i've had good luck so far. i've bought and sold several items, including cars and motorcycles and haven't been burned (yet). i have had a couple of deadbeat bidders though and i had to relist the item.

I've also bought and sold many items without any trouble. All of the above advice is sound, make sure you check the sellers feedback and at the end of the transaction if it went well make sure you exchange feedback with the seller to bolster both of your profiles!

Ebay is not kind to people who don't follow up on their words. The bidding is legally binding meaning it is not a place to screw around with their customers. However, if they somehow play tricks with words but not too obvious and you decide to buy some thing you didn't think you were gonna get, you are legally bound to purchase it or face negative feedback which basically means 90% of people will not sell to you. Use common sense.

I have bought and sold a lot on ebay for several years. Been screwed a time or two. Ebay fraud protection is worthless if you get something, ie. if you get anything it cannot be fradulent regardless of how bad it is. Pay through paypal and your credit card--your credit card company will be your best protector and at least will limit your losses. I say all this, but I have had many positive experiences buying and selling on ebay and will continue. It is a great place to find old or vintage parts!

I bought my son a new motorcycle off of ebay before Christmas and have bought plenty of other items in the past. I have never had any problem. I always carefully check the feedback section and make sure they have a good transaction record. The feedback will give you a good idea of the sellers reputation.

I bought 2 bikes off ebay and was completely satisfied.I Had to drive to pick up the bikes, so I was able to ride them before I payed the cash.

The guy who screwed me and others had stellar feedback. eBay has closed his account, but that doesn't pay me.

Thanks for your comments, from what I understand I think eBay sounds pretty safe. The only thing I don't get is how people can sell things so cheap and still make money.

Be very wary of using escrow services, especially if you don't have any recommendations from someone that's used them before.

There are many setup to rip you off and they are increasing in number every week

I'll tell you my sad tale. I bought a bicycle frame and components off ebay before Christmas for $325 and am now fighting with the seller over misrepresentation. To make a long story short his description said the frame was in excellent condition and well taken care of. The pictures (all from a distance) made it look great, didn't suspect anything and his feedback was perfect. I get the frame and there are numerous deep gouges in the bottom bracket, the chainstays are scratched, gouged and have a small crack and the head set is ovalized. The seat stay was also bent. Basically the frame is junk and I wouldn't have bid had I been able to tell the condition.

The seller will not refund me my money nor accept the frame back in the mail per my credit card company's instructions. Right now my credit card company has been my best friend. Paypal was worthless when I filed a claim and said as long as I recieved the item they would do nothing. I filed a fraud claim with both Ebay the fraud agency they linked to and have not heard anything back.

Ebay only refunds you $75 on a purchase under $500. There system is not very user friendly and is certainly slow. I'm still fighting and its been almost a month. I now will dispute my charge on my credit card and go from there.

I'll never use Ebay again even though I have had decent experince with it before and so have my family members. It only takes one guy to screw you over and then you realize how limited your options are.

Don't buy anything from pezfool@pacbell.net. He is a lying, unethical a-hole!

So far Im not liking buying on eBay. I won 2 auctions and since they were both from the same seller (www.mxusa.net) I could pay for both items together. I get a email from billpoint.com saying I can pay through them. I fill out everything and give my credit card # and confirm the sale. I get another email saying the transaction was complete and that MXUSA is getting a confirmation email too and that my money was sent to them. But MXUSA has absolutely no record of my order being paid and no emails from billpoint. Billpoint isn't responding to any emails and I dont think theres a number to call them. MXUSA has only 3 negative coments out of over 1600 so I dont think the there trying to scam me. Hopefully everything gets worked out or I wont be buying on ebay again. this was my first ebay transaction so it might be my last too. Hope everyone else has better luck

another thing to watch out for:

today i was surfing ebay and came across an auction for a 2002 yz 250. it looked perfect and the price was still very low and the end of the auction was only a few hours away. i decided to bid on it and if i won, turn around and sell it for some extra cash. i put in a maximum bid of $2900. i got outbid with about a half hour left. when i got home from work, i checked the auction and it had sold for $3151. i was kinda bummed that i didn't bid higher. i checked my email and there was a message from someone warning me that the bike was a 2001 or older. i didn't have a clue (i'm a honda guy). i guess i got lucky on that one. some buyer is going to be pissed.
