85 or newr is correct . The plastic changed from yellow to white in 85 ,and the black frame is most likely changed by owner, checking that number 3ml came up for the rear shock number but look again for the VIN on the motor or the steering head area behind the number plate. Frame /engine numbers starting with #3mk will be 89 with the frame coming from the factory painted white for the American bike. Frame is red for 85, 86 from Japan. The engine was black on the 85 I think but for colors in Canada that might be different?

you mean 84 or older.

if it changed to white in 85 then it cant be an 85 unless it was re painted (a possiblity)

Nope...he means '85 or LATER. The frame HAS been repainted. Look at the second pic, where the black paint is rubbed off by the seat, and the white is showing through.

Our '89 has the 17 digit serial number. 10th digit is K.

I'm guessing the Canadian bikes didn't have the US 17 digit serial numbers.

L would be a later model than K, so that should make your bike a '90 model, as our '89 is a K model.

I doubt seriously that the tenth digit tells much. Yamaha calls all years bikes by a letter ..... my 1980 is G , 1984 was L, 1985 N , 1986 is S , 1990 started back at A like the first YZ in 1974 but Yamaha had a way of skipping letters. Look for the parts pages at www.yamaha-motors.com there you can hunt for any bikes part and find out about it's VIN number

Count to the 10th letter in the Vin, this is the Year code letter on all mtcs, atvs etc. and use the link below to find out the year...Scroll down past the ads! If you have a bike older than 1980 then your Vin will be short and I dont know the code for the older ones.
Hope this heps!

The VIN information for various Yamaha 50, 80, 125, 180, and 200 are listed below. This VIN info is difficult to obtain, and as you can see it's very preliminary at this point...

The 9th digit of the VIN is a check digit, and varies according to the production (serial) number at the end (last 7 digits) of the VIN.

The 10th digit of the VIN is the year code. The letters I, O, Q, U, Z are not used to avoid confusion with numbers::

1980 A 1981 B 1982 C 1983 D 1984 E 1985 F 1986 G 1987 H 1988 J 1989 K 1990 L 1991 M
1992 N 1993 P 1994 R 1995 S 1996 T 1997 V 1998 W 1999 X 2000 0 2001 1 2002 2 2003 3

Note that if your scooter was manufactured from say 2/86 - 2/87, it's likely to be a '87 model. This is fairly standard practice in the automobile and motorcycle industry.

The quotes above were stolen from the www. This is US only.
Canada used/uses a different vin code, similar to the pre 1980 US vin code.

that right there is great stuff. I went and did see what the number had from the first post and there may not be enough digits to identify the yz80 in the pics but I learned some thing valuable from this. The letter in the model number doesnt ever match the letter in the VIN . AND Since the year 2000 is zero and 2005 is 5 ,what will 2010 be? I wonder what that bike will run on....hahaha
