car starter help?

i installed a new starter on my grandmothers 1990 buick lesaber custom(has a 3800 series in it) but sometimes when you start it, the starter sticks. you can hear the pinion and flywheel are still in contact. if i turn it off and restart it the problem goes away. i have shims for it but was told it didnt need them. anyone here ever have this problem?

You need to shim it. You should be able to fit a paper clip between the teeth of the starter drive and flexplate.
