Dual purpose:they are vent hoses/ drain lines. Vent the carb. Depending on how you lay the bike down the fuel should exit these hoses instead of the engine.
the carb is vented and those hoses not only direct the spillover fuel safely under the bike but help keep the vents from sucking up crud into the carb.<crud has a longer travel>
I just seriously reinforced that part of it today :o
Twice, on two different bikes, my vent hoses have sucked dirt into the bowl and created a stuck throttle. Once on my bike and once on my son's bike. Not cool! Miraculously, both of us came away from the experience virtually uninjured. Now, I have the vent hoses routed to vent canisters mounted in the air box. The only hoses exiting the bottom of my bikes are fule overflow and gearbox vent. I've had many people tell me the vent canisters are not necessary. But I'll tell you, one stuck throttle is all I can handle.
