I just did a new piston/rings and Dual Stage Reeds in my 1996 KDX200. After break-in I'm running 150 PSI, which is up 20 over the old. The bike seems to be running Rich(mucho spooge, and Lots of smoke) with LESS power than before the rebuild. I had less compression and slightly chipped single stage reeds before, and made More power. I have since checked the operation of the KIPS valve (shaft, sub ports and main) checked the reed cage and reeds, and did a leak check on the motor.
All of this leads to the question: Does better compression make the bike run richer? Do Dual stage reeds do the same thing too? The biggest area to suffering from loss of power is the top end.

Gnarly Woods Pipe, Professionally Ported, Drill airbox lid, Wiesco Piston, Maxima K2 Synthetic @ 50:1, Pump high Octane, FMF Turbine II S/A.

I just put boyesen dual stage power reeds in my 1998 kdx200. the literature that comes with the reeds says that you may need to drop 1 to 3 sizes on the main jet. my bike is fine on top end (155 main jet). I currently have the stock pipe that I cut a window out of, removed all the excess stuff inside and welded shut. what this makes is a rev pipe. at least it does on the 200. I am looking for a used torque pipe.

Hi Bob, thanks for the reply. I am going to do some jetting on it tonight. BTW, when are we going to get together for a ride?

You know, it's strange that "performance reeds" would necessitate leaning the main. You would think that most intake/exhaust mods are going to improve airflow, right? If the reeds increase airflow, wouldn't you need to go richer on the main? Maybe it's not a matter of the Amount of airflow...just the way the reeds Manage the flow??

Well the explanation that Boyesen gives is that their reeds are able to shut much quicker. What this in turn means is that the fuel charge, has less chance to revert back into the intake area. So this results in more fuel charge being trapped in the cylinder and making the bike run richer. Remember the reeds don't just increase air flow the increase fuel "charge". I just just put Boyesen Pro Series reeds in my bike. It doesn't seem to have changed the jetting much. But I'm not sure yet. Hopefully I'm hitting the trails tomorrow for my first ride this season. :aj:

While were at it....
I just pulled out a "can-O-jets", and noticed something. I have 2 155 mains. One is a 155 and one is a 155 RD. The "RD" seems to have the orfice machined deeper than the regular 155. What gives?
