Ok, so I wanna play around and make different bike...

I know that AJ makes some great 500AF's, but I have not heard if anyone has taken a CR 500 and 'stuffed' it into a YZ (2-stroke) chassis??

Any thoughts? What do you think?? A blue CR!

Thanks,

Rod

Hmmmmm, I think the conventional wisdom is that Honda has the best chassis, and Yamaha has the best motor, so that would kind of take you back to a CR500AF. The YZ chassis may be a little better about damping vibration, but overall it seems that the 3rd generation CR chassis is about the best in the business for handling and suspension. I know it works for me...but I don't know much about the YZ chassis.

How about a KX500 engine in a YZ chassis?

After a month or two of saying that I would really like a Yamaha motor in my Honda frame. I put my '02 YZ motor in my '03 CR chassis a couple months ago. It was a fairly easy install that took roughly 10-12 hours of labor. The end product was just what I wanted. :thumb:

After I read about this I couldn't believe someone would sacrifice two relatively new bikes to do that. I hope it was worth it!!! If I'd be you I might start thinking about a 500AF. Still your YZCR bike must definitely be the main attraction at the track!!

Smarttoys...

Does this mean you have a YZ rolling chassis taking up space in your garage??

I am still in the planning stages, but I love the blue bikes...

Thanks for replying..

Lining up the airboob with the carb and also fitting the pipe must have been alot of work. How did it go??

It was worth it for me but initially it was hard for me to tear apart two realitively new bikes. I didn't really sacrifice two bikes though. I found a replacement YZ motor shortly after doing the swap. Putting the CR back to stock form will be easy when it comes time to sell. Very few stock parts were modified.

Lining up the airboot with the carb and also fitting the pipe must have been alot of work. How did it go??

I had to have a tapered spacer made for the reed block carb boot. The pipe fit great. I only had to make the rear most pipe mount and lengthen the front pipe mount.

pictures? is the yz motor really that much better? who did the mods on the engines?

The YZ motor is better for me, I'll leave it at that. Crankworks did the 76mm stroke crank and EG did a 3.5mm over cylinder for me. I'll take some pictures if you are interested. I would have to email them since I haven't posted pictures here before.

rwhitlock,

I was considering the CR500 motor in the YZ frame project. Especially when the bike was torn apart. I'm kind of strapped for time in the summer and it bothered me to see the YZ motorless. I got a good deal on a YZ motor and ended up using that. I didn't have a CR500 motor to measure so I'm not sure of the demensions. It would be a cool bike if things measure up fairly well. Sorry about hijacking your thread.

xr100ider,

I emailed you a couple pictures.

smarttoys...

If you have some pics, could you send them my way... rod248@msn.com

No worries about hijacking the thread, this is just the information I was looking for.

One thing that is on my mind now is the space on the underside of the tank. This would have to be wide enough to clear the larger head (the 500).. Not sure if I will end up with the 2-stroke styling or the 4-stroke (450F) styling...

Anyway, it sure is fun to sit and dream about this. Beats work stuff any day!

How about a KX500 engine in a '03 KX250 frame? My bro has a '02 500, I got the '03 250? Nah, those 500's vibrate way to frickin' much for me. I like my bike just the way it is. I'll ride our 'Frakenbikes if I want to ride something weird.

smart- very clean job!!!

very cool! :)

one of the mechs here at SH
wanted a new cr250 engine in his newer RM250 chasis..
he did a similar conversion, he found it to be pretty painless also.
i put some laps on it ans have to admit it was exactly as expecvted CR250 style power with RM handling.

(for me i'm just very used to the CR handling so i dint see the advantage,
but it certainly ended up with his desired effect)

i just put a new cr125 in a new cr80E chasis

but i was thinking of using a YZ125 engine instead LOL
