i have a cr250 wiseco crankshaft which has only had 8 hours use but i has developed a crack on the left hand tin shield by the conrod is there any way of repairing this or is the crank scrap?

I wouldn't use it that way. I've heard that any damage to the tin can lead to the thing coming apart. It's turning some serious RPM.
Haven't heard anything about repairing the tin. The crank assembly isn't that expensive (200-250) compared to a rebuild if it lets go. I had a rod kit installed by a shop that said they had the right jigs, but they didn't and dented and gouged the tin cover trying to true the crank. Finally the shop had to buy a new crank assembly because I refused to take back the parts.
